Why is it always said that New Orleans cannot attract big name free agents? The small market excuse does not work. The market size has to be comparable to OKC, Memphis, or San Antonio. New Orleans has just as much if not more culture and events than these cities. What gives?

Breaking news, film at 11.

We are a very small market...one of the smallest. That is the biggest reason, and yes that excuse does work. Memphis didn't build their team through FA for the most part, they built it through trades and draft, with smart FA moves mixed in. Same thing with OKC and SA.

Players don't want to play in poor, small, Southern markets.

We also for many years had a VERY cheap owner, with terrible facilities, and no winning tradition at all.

OKC drafted all of their big time players. So did San Antonio.

Those teams aren't bringing in big name free agents. They drafted all their star players.

So that's not how they built their current winners. But would you say that those teams cannot attract a big name free agent? I wouldn't.

What big name free agents did they attract? Can you name one?

Well lets hold off to July 1st ( is that when FA begins?). Monty says players have been wanting to come here to play. I'm not a Monty supporter, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The upper management and ownership has been pretty shitty up until a couple years ago.

And you would be wrong. The big name free agents are max level star players. They will get max money and minutes everywhere they go. So what matters to them is their chance to win and their chance to make more money through endorsements. Exposure = Endorsements, whether that's being followed by Paparazzi in Los Angeles/New York, or being one of the teams ESPN is obsessed with covering ad nauseum because they play to the bigger audiences in the bigger TV markets.

New Orleans does have a shot at becoming a glamor market if the Hollywood South thing keeps expanding and you go from the occasional celeb courtside to the nightly group of celebs courtside. But other than that, the LeBrons of the world will never consider taking their talents to the French Quarter.

Fact. We will have to just build a consistent winner through the draft, trades, and bargain FAs, and a culture of winning. Basically, San Antonio.

Which is ridiculous considering the overall surrounding area.

But regardless, Miami is a "glamour market". South Beach, Rappers, parties, women, etc etc etc. And lower state taxes.

We aren't a glamour market and never will be.

Houston is the 4th biggest city and 5th biggest metro area in the US. It's not large vs. small it's glamorous vs. 'Murica Can a market get a guy on TV and in the news more than he deserves?

The tax incentives for Hollywood South are about to go away. So I guess it's minor free agents for us?

Nail on the head.

When the Knicks were fricking AWFUL a lot of their players were still household names.

Well that settles it.

That's why I named good small market teams.

Durant and Duncan have plenty of both.

IMO, winning with what you have can make your team more attractive to free agents.

New Orleans will never be Miami, Los Angeles or New York. But a culture of making good personnel moves and winning on the floor can make them attractive to those FAs.

They have a long way to go, but I just don't buy that "big names don't want to play in the poor south". If they can win and get paid they will sign.

Spurs have been in the playoffs every year since they drafted Duncan and they still can't attract top free agents.

They can get paid and get more exposure in the bigger markets. Not sure why you can't see it especially with this recent crop of stars.
