The art of bunting...

Does anyone teach these players how to bunt? back knee should NOT be on the ground, hips should be square, bottom hand not at the end of the bat, bat at chest level, and bunt DOWN on the pitch... Laird and others do just the opposite of this! a drag bunt is a different technique and these players are not good at that either

I've taught my kids to bunt. hand at the handle end of the bat, body square to the pitcher. they are excellent bunters. Don't know when or why kids starting emulating major leaguers that CAN'T bunt, especially by not squaring up to the pitcher or gripping the bat with both hands halfway up the bat. but it doesn't work

Skip taught me how to bunt and that's not how he showed me

Do not square you lower body and keep your eyes behind the bat. Catch the ball with the bat

No, they are given the sign and expected to bunt. There is no teaching going on at practice.

The biggest problem with most bunters and a lot of LSU's players, as well, is they keep the bat flat. The bat head needs to be at about a 45 degree angle and it needs to stay that way the whole time.

Uhh..not..thats the biggest problem is the bat is at a 45 instead of parallel to the ground.

There was an article in the Reveille this year where Laird said he didn't remember bunting one time in High School....One of the main reasons I don't think he should be in the 2 hole because we've seen his lack of a bunting prowess all to often this year. That fact is really sad considering how much of a weapon his speed could be if he was a good bunter.

they shouldnt even be bunting anyway

I mean to say that the bat head should be pointing to the sky at a 45 degree angle. The bat should absolutely not be flat.

don't know how we managed to stumble into those championships that we got before there was a rant to coach/critique the team into winning, it has been a shiity year so far, I guess the kids aren't listening

if the bat is pointing to the sky at a 45 and its not working, then why keep promoting this technique?

I used to coach at the Skip Bertman baseball camp in high school, I won the weekly championship three times in 4 weeks. All I did was give my kids the BUNT signal every other batter. My boss hated me!! He would constantly tell me "This is LSU baseball, we don't teach bunting!" Good call there Jody

Because it is the correct way to do it. This almost guarantees that you will not pop the bunt up which is the first big no no. A lot of guys start the bat correctly but drop it at contact.
The other big thing is that if its a sac bunt, then stay in the box, get it down and then run. PM may coach Laird to sac and try to beat it out, though.

i love how all or u derps are expert bunters, i guess all of u have seen 90+ mph fastballs and +breaking balls and +change ups. I guess I should ask all of yall, any question and the answer will be provided; like how to fix the usa debt crisis to how to win a college world series or even how to play qb for the tigers, bc those are all easy. haha. Have any of u ever thought that the pitchers at an sec school are the top % in the country and do not pitch the ball so it will be easily bunted? Why don't the pitchers just put the ball on a tee for the hitters or just throw the ball down the middle everytime while telling the hitters which pitch they are throwing. LSU baseball team is arguably the best team in the country and best assembled at LSU in years, I'm sure they have coaches who know more than each one of you derps, plus the players are better than you ever have been even in you dreams bc they play for the best team in the country. so stop giving crappy advice thanks

bat at an angle (not 45) and you dont try to bunt down on the ball, thats how you pop them up. assuming a right handed batter, you hold the bat near the top of its neck and pinch it between the tip of your thumb and index finger. when the ball hits the bat, it slides back into the crease of your hand and provides a perfectly deadened bunt.
