But it's a lottery, how does he know we were 1 ball away? Did the guy have our ball in his hand and drop it? What does it even mean to be one ball away in a lottery?

The lotter draws four numbers. Each team is assigned X amount of four digit combos, based on their % to get top pick. Thus, what dell means when he says we were one number off, and he explained in an article somewhere, was that the first 3 numbers pulled (123X) were a combination we had. He said we needed the last number to be a 4 or a 5 to get the 3rd pick. The last drawn was a 6, so we didnt get it. So, its not a completely irrelevent statement (though I suppose since we didnt get it, it makes no difference) but still you can imagine the tense moment Dell had in that room rooting for a 4 or 5 to come up.

Not exactly.
Picking highly in the draft is not nearly as important as being hold and attract talent. If you can't hold the talent, you can't win the title. That's what the data says, that's what history says, to anyone who cares to look.

It's just as far as if the first number was off and the other three `matched'. It's all psychological.
