After 396 arrests, woman begs for parole: ‘I’m gonna change’

quote:

Shermain Miles sat in a cinder-block room facing an enormous window — with a view of freedom in the distance — and declared herself a changed woman Tuesday.

“I don’t want to be a big monster,” said Miles, who has amassed 396 arrests in the city since 1978.

On the verge of tears, Miles begged the Illinois Prisoner Review Board during a hearing inside Logan Correctional Center to give her yet another chance at freedom.

quote:

Miles replied that she’d found God, started a Bible study and is now a “role model” for young inmates

quote:

Monreal was asked why he thought Miles deserved another chance — given her track record.

“If we can provide her with the opportunity to get back on the right track, then that’s what we’re here for,” he said.

quote:

To which Miles replied at one point: “Praise God!”

I wonder what the arrests were for.

If its prostitution and doing drugs, then I'm all for her release.

If its several charges of violence against others, then helllllll no.

ETA:

I see just once was for robbery, but that is much more vague than people realize. However if its robbery in the classic sense and shes done that before AND shes psychotic, they should just put her in a psych ward.

According to the Sun-Times, Miles came from an abusive upbringing and was first arrested in 1978 for allegedly breaking into a car. Through the years, she has also been arrested for burglary, assault, drug possession and public indecency and convicted on 73 separate occasions. In one year alone, in 1988, she was arrested 25 times. She has also spent significant amounts of times in mental health hospitals and was imprisoned at least 10 times, largely living on the streets when she wasn't behind bars.

Why what is her potential benefit to society either way? Why should tax payers continue to support her either in jail, on the street, or in a psych facility?

If the only answer is because there is no other acceptable option, I would suggest expanding the scope of acceptable.

If the answer is that because indirectly she was created by society and as such we have a responsibility to care for her, may I ask why society should not diligently peruse every avenue of prevention for future persons?

I don't see how that's even possible. One would assume she was in jail a lot over the years. Where was the time for 396 arrests?? Did she get charges while serving time...
