Anyone ever made an order for a custom kit? I'm about to upgrade from my DW Performance to a more professional level kit. I'm thinking DW Collectors or Gretsch USA Custom; maybe Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute. I'm just wondering what the time frame is and if the dealers will truly let you customize how you want.(I would hope so considering the money I'm about spend)

not sure - sounds expensive though; I think I'm going to design and build my own kit one day with my father in law. He's a wood guy and has all the tools; would be a fun project that I'd obviously keep forever - a labor of love

Yes, I will probably try and sell it. Selling on eBay is such a hassle though. I recently sold a Paiste 2002 Ride on there and it was stressful.

I ordered a custom kit from Risen Drums several years ago. I spoke to the owner of the company (he was still anwering the phone himself back in those days) and I gave him the diameters and depths I wanted, the type of wood (maple), then specified the color and finish. I don't think I was able to customize the number of plies-per-shell, though. If I remember correctly, I received the kit about eight weeks later.

I will post pics on here when I am ready to sell. Moving across the country pretty soon. But the dimensions are 22x18,13x9,16x16. I might throw in my Yamaha Musashi Snare in with it, I haven't decided yet.

A few points I'll make and I"ll try to keep from writing a book.
Getting something super customized (Like the SJC, Resin or Truth) will cost a good bit but you will take a huge hit on resale value. When you decide down the road that your tastes change you will have a hard time selling something that has a weird finish, sizes, or powder coated hardware and from a brand that is considered boutique. Especially something you will have paid out the arse for. Of those boutique custom brands C & C have definitely turned the corner and separated themselves. Similar to Pork Pie.
Those DW Performance series are fine drums and if they are tuned up well with good heads I would consider them pro-level and I actually prefer the sound of them to the regular collectors. The only difference is there aren't as many size and finish options and that's how they keep the cost down. There is nothing wrong with the fit, finish, or shells in those kits.
Don't order a Yamaha MCA. Yamaha is about to move their from Japan to China and they will be discontinuing those. So add ons won't be possible starting this summer.
I have a Gretsch USA custom kit that I got last year. It took about 12 weeks to get. They are all made to order in South Carolina. I got black lacquer but after I ordered they changed the pricing structure and now the satin finish USA kits are significantly cheaper and a great value in my opinion.
Also, DW collectors and Gretsch USA Custom are about as polar opposite on the sound spectrum as you can get. The Gretsch have thin shells, with no reinforcement rings and die cast hoops and the DW Collectors have triple flanged hoops and the shells have reinforcement rings. Two totally different sounds.

Thanks for the advice. I will be not too far from Memphis, TN after the move so I think I will check out the Memphis Drum Shop to play some first hand before I order. That place has everything under the sun.
