I really wanted to get PT's opinions on a few free agents.

1) Any chance the pels go after Martell Webster?

2) How good is Mario Chalmers and what will he sign for in free agency? Would you want him?

3) How good are OJ Mayo, Darren Collison and DJ Augustine and would you want to sign any of them?

TIA

1. Always a chance for anything. I couldn't put a number on it until after the draft. He wouldn't be a big piece and I guess I'd take him as depth, but nothing makes me want him

2. Product of his team. He'll sign for way too much. I don't want him for what he will sign for.

3. They are good. Not outstanding though. I wouldn't mind Collison actually. I don't know much about DJ Augustine so I can't comment on him.

1. I could see us making a run at him. I wouldn't mind him becoming a Pelican.

2. He's not really the type of PG we want/need. I think he resigns with Miami.

3. If Gordon is gone, I would like to sign Mayo. I'm not very high on Collison. It would be nice to bring Augustine back home, but I don't see it happening.

1) webster="Good three-point shooter... Not bad rebounder... Relies too much on his outside shot... Doesn't create for others... Low basketball IQ".
2) chalmers pretty much lost his minutes to cole in these playoffs. says a bit considering the competition was inferior!
3) roberts shoots and handles the ball as well as all three.

bottom line is i wouldn't want them as starters and they'll want too much $$ for reserves.

That's kind of what I was thinking.

So no one thinks Collison or Mayo are better than GV?

And I mention Webster because we need a 3 and I think he's the best available in FA and the draft.

collison is not, and Mayo plays 2 not 1

This doesn't quite go here, but I'm not starting a new thread for it...

What do you think about the idea of taking on Kendrick Perkins' contract for two years, along with a sweetener, in exchange for Lopez?

That's a net increase in about $3-4m in payroll per season just between those two switching places, let alone the inclusion of Jeremy Lamb, Perry Jones III, and/or the Toronto 1st (#12 overall).

Perkins is still a good defensive center but he's godawful on offense, so that take pressure off Davis on the defensive side but increase the pressure on everyone else on offense.

Neither PJ3 or Lamb has shown much at the NBA level yet, but it's hard getting minutes on a team like that.

That Toronto pick could potentially become Shabazz Muhammed or a Euro player like C Rudy Gobert or SF Dario Saric, depending on how things play out on draft night.

I'd normally be more wary about taking another team's trash, but if Monty's idea is to become a slow-paced team that plays good defense, then Perkins would be a decent fit for what he'd want to do and we'd get additional pieces to help make it work.

Unless we thought we had a legit shot at using that cap space on a good FA/Trade I'm definitely down with renting it for more assets.

Would love to get Webster. He would come at a good price and is a very good shooter.

No thanks on Perkins.

Let me rethink that actually: it would depend on the sweetner. They'd have to give me a lot.

I can't get the numbers on a Perkins/Lopez swap to work in any realistic way on Trade Machine.

The suggested deal was the Toronto pick and the OKC pick with Perkins for Lopez and a 2016 2nd.

#12 could be useful if the front office like Dario Saric as much as is rumored.

#29, not so much.

That's the kind of position where you either draft-and-stash a foreign player or draft a project big man such as Festus Ezeli or Fab Melo.

It won't work right at the moment because we still have all the dead cap space from buying out Rashard Lewis and Matt Carroll.

When the new league year starts, we'll have the cap space to pull it off.

Doesn't work money wise. We'd have to throw in players to make the numbers work better.

And later picks in a completely terrible draft doesn't really entice me that much to take on two years of Perkins.

Edit: I see your point on the money situation. Still not enough value for me.

I pointed this out in another thread, but I think the 31st pick is way more valuable than the 29th pick because of 1st round guaranteed contracts.

I've said the same thing in the past. Most teams would rather move back 2-3 spots to not have a guaranteed contract, unless there is a player they really, really want.

But 12 and 29 in this draft is pretty shite value. Lopez has team options and makes far less, and is far younger.

I'd really really like to get him. Not sure if we have a shot or not, but he fills our biggest need and is a good shooter. Perfect Fit IMO.

That sweetner would have to be pretty damn sweet. Better than draft picks sweet. I'd rather have Lopez and his contract for a few more years than Perkins and his contract.

I actually would tend to think he's one of the guy's that's said something to Monty. Played with Monty in Portland, had injury issues and played in Minnesota and now Washington. I can see him looking back fondly on his time with Monty in Portland the way his career has gone.

Not to mention why help your competition out of a jam. I'd definitely want more than Saric since we'd have to eat 2 years of Perkins.
