Compliance Cars

Have ya'll heard of this? The new mileage standards imposed by Obama are AVERAGES. IE, if the new standard is 35 mpg, that doesn't mean all cars have to get 35. It means if you want to build one that gets 15 mpg, ya gotta build one that gets 55 mpg. The one that gets 55 keeps you in compliance with the new standard.

So, auto makers are building tiny hybrids that get 55 mpg, but no one wants them and they're expensive to build so they they sell under cost of production. An article in WSJ says every time a company sells one, they lose 5 to 10K because it costs more to make it than the sales price.

Thus, the loss on the compliance car must be made up by raising the prices on cars getting 25 mpg that people actually want.

This is crazy.

This is another point Romney missed in the debates.
Obama was bragging about how because of government
people would be able to buy cars that get 35 MPG.

Romney should have shot back that all that means is that the
only car the average person will be able to buy will be a 2 seat SmartCar type piece of crap.

Its also funny how they determine MPG for each car. Its done by the manufacturer in a lab with little regard for the driving conditions we all encounter.

That's why its so difficult to replicate the MPG figure on the side of the window in real life driving.

No. When I was young there was no fleet average.
When fleet average came into play it was moderate and the adjustments could be handled by switching to things like lighter metal. There was no such thing as a compliance car before Obama.

I got a piece of mail from State Farm a couple of weeks ago. They wanted to put a device in my truck to help monitor and make me a better driver.

Yeah, right. There's an underlying theme to this no doubt.

Why do you think Progressive is pushing the 'snapshot' BS?

I got the same letter. No thanks State Farm. Keep your 1% (~$11/yr) potential savings

Insurance by nature is socialist.
So if we all pay $300 a month but only a few actually have claims, obviously the claim people are getting benefits paid by the non-claim people.

I think what they are trying to do is unwind a little bit of this by gathering data that supports trends and reliable predictions.
This way they can assign more cost to the predicted claim people and give the non-claim people a price break.

Just like in health insurance why smokers pay more than non-smokers.

The trouble is that the data can also be used against you at some point so if you do it, you had better be a very consistent and safe driver.

Just got my wife a 2013 Malibu. Comes with no spare tire because of weight/mpg. Not even a place for a spare.

Something tells me it's govt. related. Businesses do get credit, breaks, whatever from administering these types of programs. SF has to just pull me up in their computer to see what kind of driver I am. Record speaks for itself.

IIRC imported cars don't count in the math. GM has small cars in Europe and Asia that are very nice. But instead, we get the US made Chevy Cobalt pos. Gotta protect the Unions.

Are the tires some type of run-flat where you can still drive for at least a reasonable distance?

My Cadillac SRX also came with no spare. When I asked about it I was told it wasn't needed bc their roadside assistance would be there to help if anything ever happened. I LOL'd. Ended up hating the car anyway and went back to a large sized SUV.
