XTC put out a few 60s-inspired albums in the mid 80s, and they are great. I'm particularly fond of Psonic Psunspot.

Vanishing Girl

Shiny Cage

The Affiliated

Pale And Precious is a brilliant song. I don't care what Kafka says.

Have we been through this before?

I really like "Vanishing Girl", don't know much about the others

Only briefly. Both albums offer quality throughout. Give them a spin.

Good question. I found them (The Dukes) on Pandora and just got their anthology a few days ago. The anth is called Chips from the Chocolate Fireball. It covers 25 O'Clock, an EP from '85 and Psonic Psunspot, an LP from '87. Apparently they released similar stuff as XTC - Oranges and Lemons in '89. Their XTC releases are lauded by critics, but I haven't got that far yet.

I'm glad you're enjoying this stuff, too.

A little bit but not terribly. They're still sort of an 80's Beatles/Kinks, imo

And I'd start on Skylarking. Probably their best all around album.

Beatles/Kinks influence is a good description, especially after they added the janglier guitar around 1980.

Some of their songs I like best like "Making Plans for Nigel" certainly share a lot with the more well known UK mod revival bands like The Jam though they're usually always more new wave / angular.

A speedier Cars, to name a big band, may be a decent comparison for the earlier 80s stuff I've heard.

The earlier XTC like the White Music LP is even edgier.

Haven't really listened much to the Geffen label stuff from the late 80s and early 90s except recall "Mayor of Simpleton" on MTV when I was a kid. Really big label production sound that's not my bag but still jangle pop.

If you like The Jam I'd recommend The Donkeys. My favorite mod revival group. A double LP came out on Detour a few years back with their complete recordings, sure it's easy to download or find on CD if you don't buy vinyl:

DONKEYS "FOUR LETTERS"

Donkeys "What I Want"
