Gregg officially the closer. No runs in 7.1 IP. 5 for 5 in saves. Sorryanus gets a seat in favor of Ryan Sweeney. Barney is out, Valbuena playing 2B, Ransom at 3B.

ETA, championship.

3 for his last 30 and facing a pitcher that he is 3-16 against in his career. Good time to go ahead and give him a breather and get Ransom in the lineup, who has been raking the ball.

Funny quote from cubs blog writer gregg and valbuena

quote:

If I’d told you in February that there would come a day that Luis Valbuena would be batting third and Kevin Gregg would be closing and that you wouldn’t hate it, I would have lost 85% of my readership.

Sorryanus

C'mon, he's not to blame.

He's been one of the better players on the team, but everyone still hates him. He sucks and doesn't hustle even though he's tied for the team lead in stolen bases.

yea i'm trying to figure if it's a carry over from a few years back when this description might have been a bit more accurate, or if it's just been said so much that everyone parots it, facts and opinions of coaching staff, front office and teamates be damned.

I really think that it's this. My guess is that most of the people saying it don't really watch the Cubs. They listen to what their buddies say and then they jsut repeat it.

Yeah, I don't get the love affair for Darwin Barney. He is definitely a nice defensive player, but I doubt he will be starting for the cubs in three or four years.

You would like your 4 hole hitter to have more than 10 rbi in which of those came in 2 games.

Leading cubs in stolen bases isnt saying much.

That said he can heat up and get the clutch hits he will be fine. Still don't love him in 4 hole

I don't think anyone has a love affiar with Barney. He is a solid player though. He is a career .260 hitter and never makes an error at second base. Easily one of the top 4 defenders in all of MLB. He very well may not be starting for the Cubs in a few years, but the Cubs appear to have a couple of potentially special players in the minor leagues.

He had 14 RBI at this exact point last season. He ended the season with 108.

He also only had 1 HR at this point and ended with 33.

The numbers will be there come September.

It does for those individuals that say he doesn't hustle and is lazy.

+ 1,000,000

Between him and Borbon and Gregg, the front office is starting to have some really nice pick-ups.

Nice for Villanueva to get out of that jam with only one run scoring. Holliday was hitting like .500 with RISP and we got a double play from him. He needs to tighten up the control though.

Well he is old, and he never heats up until may, this isn't the first year of power outage in april.

Also i think the point isn't that he's not good (because i'd aruge that he's old and not that great) but rathe rthat he's a scape goat for why we suck becuase he's "lazy" and has "poor work ethic" which are false.

I am really starting to like Valbuena a lot. Dude looks like he has turned the corner and is ready to be an everyday major league third baseman.

There was an interesting point of view eariler this year that people seem to think highly of barney because he's started hot the past couple of years and by the time no one is watching he's leveled out to where barney's niche is, good defense, no real bat to speak of, but because people have stopped watching by then, they carry this belief that he's a lot better than he is.

Again this just a bloggers point of view which i think holds some water.

oh and RizzOMG!
