This might've been posted at some point, but I came across it last night. Just type in the last name and you're off... I saw the Koufax thread last week, and figured this is where it came from.

Ahh...this was what you were talking about last night. I was out of it due to witnessing a shitty Rangers game in person.

Yeah..that's pretty interesting. I like the line about Bench "give him a couple of years and he'll be the best in the league."....try best that's ever played that position!!

Interesting is an understatement. There are so many questions Id like to ask scouts from back then and even now.

First off...scouts get off by finding the next star. Obviously Bo Jackson is pretty easy to scout but what about other players? How many reports were like Bo's where the guy didn't pan out at all?

I mean...people embellish their side of an opinion all the time. I bet it was tough to be fair in reports when you think you've found the next guy. I wonder how many times a scout can "cry wolf" without getting called out by his coworkers and peers.

The whole attitude of old school sports guys intrigues me. It seems so basic and dumbed down compared to new minds. But both work pretty well I guess. I'd love for a scout now and one from back in the day to sit down discuss ball players. Would make for great entertainment IMO.
