Obviously there was a lot of stadium envy and ATL hate pouring forth in the first several pages of this thread.

This thing looks friggin' amazing. It will be one of the premier if not THE premier facility in the country.

No doubt that the new stadium will be top of the line.

But that thing is fricking ugly, dude.

Impact seating...is pretty lame.

I agree. It screams "what else can we do?!"

You can almost guarantee a college football playoff game every year. Future NC games too.

As SBNation put it:
quote:

This could happen, but only if Arthur Blank is truly gangster. Are you gangster enough to deprive Jerry Jones of owning the world's most ostentatious television, Mr. Blank?

This has become a dick-measuring contest between Atlanta and Dallas for college football dominance. We already have the CFB HoF going in, plus the SECCG. So now we're just giving the middle finger to the JerryDome with this monstrosity

I would encourage everyone to read the SBNation write up, though. Some lulz were had LINK

In a perfect world, Marta would expand the lines to Turner Field and then run a line up 316 to Athens.

Holy shite, the revenue the city and the Braves would make on drunk UGA students taking a train from Athens to the stadium...

ETA: Not to mention the reduced traffic congestion for Gameday in Athens

MARTA doesn't have the money to expand. They get no money from the state, IIRC.

As far as expanding to Athens, a lot of the suburbs of Atlanta don't want anything to do with MARTA, so I doubt that Athens would either.

They reason that it will "bring the unwanted element in" even though right now if the "unwanted element" wants to get up into Cobb and Gwinnett Counties, all they have to do is get on CCT or GCT at Arts Center Station and ride their happy asses up there.

I'm sure Athens and the surrounding communities would take on a similar attitude.

It doesn't matter anyway because, like I said, the money isn't there for it.

Well, we're just gonna have to do something to correct this issue.

Well, there's something that almost all of the haters on the first few pages have in common.

First thing I thought when I saw it was "Olympic bid."

This is totally a ploy for international appeal, not just "Let's host NCAA tournaments, SEC championships, and Super Bowls"

It's fairly well known that Atlanta wants to host the World Cup. It's a huge ploy for that. Maybe another Olympics as well, but definitely a World Cup.

Hence I said "in a perfect world."

And, having grown up in the Roswell/Alpharetta area, I am fairly confident that running a MARTA line up to Mansell Rd would actually please a lot of people.

But, dont you dare let any of the "unwanted element" take a step further than that to the pristine horse-owning bigwigs in Milton, Windward, and Forsyth!

As for Athens, the fricking projects are right across Baxter Street from the dorms The so-called "unwanted element" isn't an issue. Plus, all the Athens Hipsters could ride their happy asses from The Globe to Little 5 without ever having to fire up their Yugos.

That would be an awful ride on a MARTA train. Especially on a packed weekend train, assuming that they would be really heavily used.

You haven't lived until you're been packed into a MARTA train like a can of sardines being touched by strangers in places that you have no desire to be touched. I'm talking about you, post sell out Braves game MARTA.

Knowing them they would probably lose $50M a year operating it too.

and we'll just continue to host our Sugar Bowls and (playoff) games and compete for the big neutral site games with our raggedy ol' Superdome

Oh, I have lived. There is no gender bias to the grabby hands of a packed Marta train.

Obviously, but something that limits the amount of train switching (hence, MARTA controlling all of it).

There are already some perfect rail lines running from ATL out through Dacula and into Athens (I think Norfolk Southern owns them?). It has always been a personal dream of mine that they would modify Sanford so that the famous railroad tracks behind the East endzone would drop off fans at the stadium.

MARTA could be the legal operator of commuter rail but it would be a different system than the current subway setup. No way they'll extend an existing rail line all the way out to Athens, it's not feasible.

New stadium would guarantee Atlanta as one of the host sites. As for the Olympics, if Blank is smart the stadium's design would include the option to put a track (which would also allow non-Olympic track and field events to be held there).

In a perfect world Turner Field would be located in Atlantic Station.
