Yep, choice of many a Western country, especially US, for establishing their initial Asian base.

It's a nice place to go. Clark Quay had some decent bars and a good steak house. Like some else said the local Tiger beer was pretty good but at 13 sing a beer good luck getting drunk. Check out the night club on top of the Marina Sands and the Irish Pub across from the Orchard towers is a pretty good hangout also.

Singapore is awesome, I loved my time there. Be sure to visit Sentosa island, pretty good resort area. I was only there for a few days, I don't really remember too much of the bars names and stuff, but just get food from vendors on the street, its really good and very cheap.

A good buddy of mine is dating a girl that lives there. It's nice but different.

You have to pay to use the public restroom and a lot of eating chicken feet.

But there's other stuff too, Americanized stuff. You'll enjoy it, I would think.

This....we had a 13 hour layover there about a year ago coming back from Austrailia. We went around the city because my wife had lived there for 3 years when she was a kid.

Make sure to go check out the tropical gardens...really pretty!

We went to the top of the boat hotel, pretty cool, and a great view. Check out the water/laser show there also.

When we were there they were building some sort of area near the casino. The cab driver told us it was gonna be these huge trees where they would have restaurants at the top...looked pretty cool.

Casino was really nice.

Gondola from Sing harbor to Senosta Island.

Starts on the 15th floor of an office building.

Photo is very indicative of the smog that usually covers Sing

Also the most expensive country in the world to own a car in. They have COE (certificate of entitlements) that run for ten years and cost like three times the cars value. So you pay a 200% tax just to drive a car for ten years.

quote:

Francis Goh sits in a bronze BMW 335i convertible in a Singapore showroom, waggling the wheel and feeling the leather. He isn’t fazed by the S$340,000 ($260,000) price tag, five times what the same car costs in the U.S.

quote:

Car buyers in Singapore must pay for excise and registration duties of about 150 percent of the vehicle’s market value, as well as bid for a limited number of government permits, called certificates of entitlement, that allow a car on the road for 10 years. The cost of a permit alone would now buy a new Porsche Boxster in the U.S., or a C-Class Mercedes in Hong Kong, where curbside pollution rose to a record last year.

re: Singapore restaurants and bars

So I just got some info from my dad. He says heads up because there are three "Mandarin something" hotels and the cab drivers get confused (intentionally sometimes) on which hotel to go to. Make it very clear about which hotel you're in to avoid any extra cab fare.

As far as entertainment goes, I was told that you can't go wrong anywhere along Orchard Road. Apparently there's a lot of swanky shopping plus plenty of good restaurants. Even places like food courts can have good food.

And if you're going to be there for a longer trip and miss Western food, there are plenty of options like California Pizza Kitchen, Chili's, Hardrock, Starbucks etc.

My Dad also recommends that you check out China town. The restaurants are very authentic and there's some cool things to do/look at. And it's an easy cab ride; just tell the driver to drop you off at the cab stop in China town and you'll be set.
