They can use the force to move huge objects. Why can't they use force to make themselves fly?

Luke looks like he flies out of the carbonite chamber in his Cloud City duel with Vader.

FYI my Star Wars knowledge is limited to the six movies. Maybe there are flying Jedi in the books.

Like Superman, Jedi seem have a certain power when the situation calls for it, however do not seem to have the power when it is convenient for the story.

When falling, they seem to be able to guide themselves. Like Luke did at Cloud City.

This is a very good quesiton.

I've actually never thought about it, but they definitely should be able to.

I thought that Jedi were only supposed to use their force abilities when facing adversity or dire situations and not for convenience or luxury. I guess flying to go help someone in a drastic situation would call for that, so I guess they can't. Doesn't make sense if they can't though.

At the very worst lift a rock and fly it around and stand on top of it...

Luke got sucked into a vacuum, correct?

Just judging by what Luke did I would say they can make huge leaps, but not fly. Vader seemed to make some controlled jumps at times as did Qui gon and Kenobe.

If you really want to read a lot into it, Luke was clearly muched more gassed than Vader in cloud city as he couldn't even fend off some slow moving junk. Maybe not having very much control of the force wore him out more quickly in the fight.

Well at the beginning of attack of the clones, anikan(sp) does the same thing. Long fall. Can't just be good timing.

yea you can definitely tell Vader is using little to no effort while Luke is straining himself with every move

the midichlorians can not be used from a moving position, they release force power when stationary and focused. longer term force powers are just residual burst of force...like burst speed.

If they can fly, then why didn't Mace Windu stop his fall when he was shocked out the window by Darth Sidious?

The simple answer is that it takes to much concentration and energy for a jedi to have continues flight. They can leap and glide for short distances when faced with imminent danger or death.
