Got into this conversation today and it came out that my 30-06 hunting rifle is set to about 2lbs. But we shoot bench rest competition guns as well and one of those, I didn't think could be measured because if you actually feel your finger touching the metal of the trigger, it goes off.

Come to find out, I'm wrong. It's 2.2 oz's. The old man had a way to measure it in grams and converted it to ounces.

Needless to say, this is not a gun you take to the deer stand. It weighs about 20 lbs. .308. Stacks bullets in the same hole at 100 yards so you can cover ten of them with a nickle. And honestly, that's probably operator error at work.

I can understand an extremely light trigger pull like that on a highly specialized gun like a benchrest rifle. I don't shoot benchrest. All my guns are for hunting, self defense or recreation. On my big game hunting rifles I like a trigger pull of 3-4#. My varmint hunting guns are usually a little lighter, maybe as low as 2#. Of course, all of this is dependent on the gun being safe w/ a lighter trigger pull. I don't make any sort of adjustments or alterations on the triggers of my self defense guns. If I don't like the trigger, I'll get a different gun.

I have shot 2oz before. My hunting rifle is at 2lb. I love the 2oz but would never do anything more than varmint hunt with it.

Yeah it's specialized for sure. Definitely not something you want to walk around with a round in the chamber.

Ok You're a damn gun shooting cave man.

Had to be said.

You are still at the bust up some rocks stage of gun ownership.

Guess what, as time marches on, so does gun tech.

I know.

Shocking.

I love to hear about guys who think they have reached the pinnacle of shooting because they can empty a whole magazine into a body sized target at 20 steps.

My buddy has a 270 like that. No idea when the damn thing is gonna shoot(I like to be able to tell). I think his is pulling lower than 1lb. I shoot 6" groups at 100yds with that thing, and even when my 30-06 was set at like 7lbs, I'd get 1" groups at 250yds

2lbs is as low as I wanna go, and I have mine at 2.5 right now. No idea what my 30-30 is set at because it shot perfectly out of the box. Same with my black powder gun

It is somewhat more about the person behind the trigger for me, but, as an objective standard - approaching 2 pounds is the limit of safety for me, and even then - I would be forced to remind the person they have a light trigger if handling the weapon.

But it is a tertiary concern for me.

1. Is the carrier a mature, responsible person?

2. Does the carrier always follow Rule #1 (muzzle in a safe direction)?

3. Is the trigger too light?

I've shot a savage .308 with a 2.4 oz trigger. Absolutely do not want. You have to very gently close the bolt or it will drop the sear. I wouldn't mind having it for a target rifle (which that rifle is) but no way in hell for a hunting rifle.

My 6.5x55 is set somewhere around 4.5 pounds with zero creep and that is an ideal hunting trigger IMO. I don't mind a heavy trigger as long as it doesn't have creep.

i have my deer rifle set at 4 lbs. when I first got the rifle I took it to an old Gunsmith and asked him to set it at 2 lbs, he told me he wouldn't set a trigger past 4 lbs.It is clean crisp and beautiful, he did one hell of a job. When an animal is in the scope it almost feels like I breathe on it and it fires. Anyway such things don't matter to me because I wont chamber a round until I am ready to fire.

My Rock River trigger is the stock two stage and I've not seen it fit to adjust it yet.

Its the person behind the trigger that concerns me, not the trigger itself.
