Straight talk uses Verizon network.
Got my son the Virgin Mobil plan that uses Sprint network. Had to pay $600 for iPhone, but his bill is only $30 a month. I break even in month 10 and then save a lot for then on out. 350 minutes and unlimited data and texts.
I have Verizon and wife and other son have AT&T. All iPhones and he's doesn't have any more issues than the rest of us.
I pay $71 with my corporate plan an wife and other son pay about $89 each.
I can say from current experience, discount plans are worth it. Of course, it's even better if you don't purchase a $600 iPhone. Many android options for $200ish.

I've wondered how this works If you already have an iPhone.

I have my old att iphone 4 on straight talk now. I ordered the correct micro sim from straight talk and it works good. Pretty sure i am on at&t towers not verison as the other poster said.
I did have to jailbreak the phone so i could change the MMS settings. MMS will not work unless you do so.
