To explain in a bit more depth...i get the feeling that if you don't go to an Ivy League university, you aren't educated....

she simply comes across as a snob and someone who doesn't get that the military over the last 60 years has enabled more people to get an education than she'll ever know....

Snob? She sounds like the American success story, pulling herself up by her bootstraps and still being concerned about those she left behind.

The test was also free, unlike the ACT and SAT, which I had to choose between because I could afford only one registration fee. I chose the ACT and crossed off those colleges that asked for the SAT.

Back in my day the ACT, SAT and NMSQT (national merit) were free of charge. But only the top students got to take it paid for by the district.
I had 500 kids in my senior class. Only 50 of us got to take the NM test. Only 3 of us passed it.
And then the scholarships starting rolling in, Jack.

we took the pre-SAT and pre-NMSQT free at Archbishop Shaw....I took the ACT as a Junior and now wish that I'd retaken it as a Senior(and taken some more math)...my composite was something like a 27...with a 19 in Math and a 36 in Social Studies....

this is a classic case of what you find out years later...

Um, no.

The article is a response to the often-cited claim that rural poor kids don't go to elite schools and that "something should be done".

Her response is that elite schools don't recruit there, and if they want to then perhaps they should follow the example of the military, which does do so.

Nothing more or less than that. She's saying students from Cutoff don't even apply to Harvard because Harvard doesn't seriously try to recruit from small-town LA.

That isn't snobbish, if anything she is pointing out the failings of elite school recruitment.

There's actually a fairly prominent Harvard alum from Cut Off.

I'm from a small town in Louisiana, and Columbia recruited me pretty hard. If I knew then what I know know, I probably would have gone there. I know a brother and sister from Shreveport; he went to Harvard, she went to Sarah Lawrence. There are easier ways to get to elite schools than to grow up in Louisiana, but it's not impossible.

growing up on the wank, the closest I got to an elite school was an alternate appointment to West Point...

looking back with 20/20 hindsight, there was a lot I didn't know and it was rough enough fighting the way I was brought up that would have been happy to see me with a career on Peters Road.....

Magnet school. 210 PSAT, 32 ACT, 1420 SAT, SAT IIs all above 1450.

Still in the Navy like Davy--maybe for life.

Let it go. You can do quite well in this country without being an academic superstar. Or you can be great in school and still love a relatively non-posh job.

ETA: And I'm black. I guess by Affirmative Action standards I should be a US Senator by now.

Navytiger, I can't complain...you probably know a bit of my background, but let's say that I'm doing quite well between my military retirement and what i get from the VA....

her attitude about the military recruiters is what really got under my craw....
