The writing was on the wall when y'all took Simmons's teammate. I'm surprised the coaches even brought this kid on a visit.

They've been recruiting him for a long time and he's handled the process very well. It's not like LSU couldn't foot the bill for it.

With Jalyn Patterson, I think it was a case of McCray getting his guy (played for ATL Celtics) over the guy that Robert Kirby (Asst. now at Memphis) started to recruit. I'm sure his commitment helped with getting Simmons, but wasn't of huge significance.

Kind of old news but do you ever think we will see Deng Deng wind up on campus? It looks like that ship has sailed

It's been gone for a while. All the best for both parties, imo.

With the recruits we've gotten since that time, is Deng Deng still a take?

I saw the video of that interview Andrew Lopez did with Brandon and he ask him who was some of the schools recruiting him,and those were the schools he named. He never said these are my top 5 unless he did off air.Saying all that I do think he ends up at LSU.

The 2015 class COULD be very, very, good. As in better than the 2013 class.

This may have been discussed right after his commitment, but Elbert Robinson doesn't fit the mold of a Johnny Jones player. I'm sure he'll get much better conditioning at the college level, but he's still a big guy-that's not going to change. I'm sure the staff will put him in a position to succeed. They did find a way to use Del Piero. It just seems like he doesn't fit our style of play. Will he just play short periods of time or what?

He's a 7'-0 325 lbs athletic center. The coaches will play him as much as possible.

While he doesn't exactly fit the run and gun offense, I think we need to wait and see on Elbert. He's very talented and would be a much higher rated player if he was 30-40lbs lighter (and he still moves pretty well even with his weight).

I don't think they would have recruited him if they didn't think he would succeed at LSU.

I believe Johnny is able to adapt to his talents. You're going to run more when you have a smallish roster. When you have a legit big man, it gives you the option to lock down in the half court. Big E gives us versatility.

If anyone else was hoping to get a look at Malik Newman in a Calloway game against Devin Booker's Moss Point team, the game is off. Moss Point's coach says his team isn't playing on Thursday night. Clarion Ledger

Callaway-Moss Point ESPN game off, says Cotton
October 31st, 2013| by John Talty

Remember that big ESPN game meant to showcase Malik Newman versus Devin Booker? The nation’s top-ranked junior versus the 18th best senior?

Don’t bank on it happening, says Moss Point coach Micoe Cotton.

Callaway and Moss Point had plans to play an ESPN televised game at the Mississippi Coliseum. Callaway coach David Sanders told The Clarion-Ledger earlier this month that the teams were in the process of finalizing a game to be played on Thursday, Dec. 19.

But Cotton told The Clarion-Ledger Thursday that he never agreed to a Dec. 19 date because he preferred a Jan. 4 game so that more Moss Point fans could make the trip up to Jackson for the game. He said that Sanders was also open to the idea, but that a higher up in the JPS athletic department nixed that date.

“It wasn’t good for my people to travel up there for a Thursday,” Cotton said. “We could have found a Saturday date we would have played.”

Cotton said he was supposed to have a teleconference call with Sanders and an ESPN representative, but it never happened. He said he’s still open to playing in the game if ESPN gets involved in scheduling it.

“If ESPN gets involved we’ll take a look at it, but as of right now it’s not going to happen,” he said.

The game was meant to feature the two top basketball players in the state of Mississippi. Booker, who committed to Kentucky Thursday, averaged 29.7 points per game and is considered one of the nation’s top shooters.

Newman, the consensus top-rated class of 2015 prospect, lead Callaway to its second consecutive Class 5A championship last season. Newman already has scholarship offers from Kentucky, Kansas, Duke and Florida, among others.

Guess he wanted a few fans there so a Jackson venue could feel a little more like a neutral court. Seems kind of dumb to me when thinking about the exposure to his program. Since Calloway would have an overwhelmingly large number of fans either night, I can't imagine someone on the Jackson school board cared whether they played on Thursday or Saturday.

Do the recruits have enough pull for this to be Booker dictating scheduling? If so, any chance he gets his way?

That was one of the first things that surprised me when seeing him play. There's alot of potential there if he can get his weight down.

I agree. Just seemed like an odd signing considering our style of play, and I'd hate to see him play just in short spurts.
