I have a 4.5 HP evinrude that my brother and I inherited from our uncle. It has always run, but never correctly. I have assumed that the jets in the carb have to be pretty nasty. Anyway, I brought it down to the camp this weekend and couldn't get it to fire up. It has been slowly shitting the bed over the last few years, but it seems mainly fuel system oriented.

The one time I thought I'd rebuild the carb, I realized that almost all screws had been soldered over (anyone know why?) It's definitely time now. If I do end up screwing up the carb beyond repair, what are my chances of finding a replacement? Should I just pull the carb and bring it to someone?

I'm also going to tear down the lower unit, change the gaskets, and put new oil in it. I'm sure that alone will probably increase my output after 33 years.

ETA - I'm not a boat mechanic or mechanic of any kind, but I'm fairly mechanically oriented. I have rebuilt a lower unit.

Good year for Envinrudes......I'm still rolling with a 25HP on my 16' Flat I inherited from my dad.

Still runs like a clock.

Have you ever done any work on it? Just curious if you had any suggestions on parts retailers if it comes to that.

I've never done a lick of work on it myself, so as far as parts I really don't know.....it actually sat up about 7 years after my dad passed away. I took it to the outboard shop and for about $200 they had it in tip top shape.

I assume this is in NOLA.... I'm in BR. The only place I know of here is Charlie Ward's.

Probably soldered on because of stripped holes. I'd do it.

Get some small, stranded speaker wire to clean out the jets. Use starter fluid to see if it wants to fire, and if the motor is actually any good

Jerry's Boat Repair in Gonzales does great work with older outboards too.
Sometime you can find boat parts at NAPA.
The Mercury ignition for my motor was $150. NAPA knock off was only $50.
The Mercury ignitions would only last a few years. I've had the NAPA one on there for 5 w no problems.

I know the motor is good. It has run fairly recently, but sat up for a few years and won't crank. When it did run, it idled poorly, which makes me think the jets are pretty gummed up.

I need to grab a new sparkplug, as well. If I do end up tearing it down, I will probably try to change the hoses and cables while I'm in there.

With that said, I guess I should tear down the flywheel as well, assuming that could also be causing my idle issues.

Negative.

Do a good carb rebuild (speaker wire or frog hair is the ticket). Drop that lower unit and replace your impeller (muy importante).

Thanks, I'd rather not waste any time.

I didn't even think of this, but if I'm taking it down, I might as well.

If this is the motor, you can get most of the carb parts from HERE.

It's actually a model E5RCSS. I see that they have most of the carb parts. However, they don't even sell jets anymore...

Check ebay. I got a 1980 Merc running by buying new old stock parts on ebay. I could not find the parts online anywhere else. Everyone jokes about Seafoam, but it has worked for me cleaning carbs on a boat motor and lawn equipment.
