I have been thinking about what causes people to litter.

I have lived in LA for over 30 years and have always been dismayed at how people treat their roadways and waterways. The sight of someone throwing garbage out their window or tossing the empty beer can over the side of a boat is common. Most of those people would not throw garbage in their front lawn (of course, many do), so why do they fell it is ok to trash places that do not belong to them. The out-of-sight, out-of-mind syndrome is far too common and we certainly have one of the trashiest states in the country.

My wife and I are in the NW getting ready to start site prep work on our summer home/retirement home next week and it is always striking to me how much cleaner this part of the country is when compared with LA. We ran up to BC today for a quick visit and discovered one of the reasons that their roads are so clean...the posted fine for littering is $2,000 Canadian!

What are your theories about why LA residents, especially sportsmen who should know better, seem so willing to trash their own state. What can/should be done to change the culture? LA is a spectacular state and should be respected.

I don't litter intentionally, sometimes empty beer cans fly out the bed of my pickup.

People in the NW take more pride in where they live. Shame too, since some of La is naturally beautiful.

Laziness. Plain and simple.

First thing I noticed when I was up there. Then again it's too cold to roll windows down 45 weeks out of the year and the other 7 the skeeters are so bad if you roll then down you get west Nile by ingestion.

Germany is the cleanest place I have ever seen. Not a single cigarette butt nor candy bar wrapper. It was eerie how clean it was.

Not saying that a dirty LA is better, by any means.

No question it can be fairly cool up here at times (some snow today), but we regularly drive with our windows down and we spend a lot of time on the water. So the opportunity to toss the can certainly exists.

As for skeeters...most people do not even have screens on their windows, which stay open a good bit of the year (no ac needed here).

Yeah, we rarely have skeeters. Inland areas have them much worse than coastal towns.

Not sure exactly what you are referring to, but I can guess. Both regions have significant minority populations. Both regions have their share of white, blue collar, red necks. Both regions have large populations of hunters and anglers.

That was a joke. But best place to put it in perspective is Niagara Falls. Soon as you cross border it's clean. Literally the next thing you notice after the falls.

They just don't care. And they aren't educated enough to realize that they should care. They think that trash on side of the road won't affect them. But it does. A states image has a lot to say about the potential workforce when companies are investigating moves. We have a lazy image, therefore we are forced to offer ridiculous tax breaks to entice new jobs to the state. People who don't care about their own home typically don't care about quality and productivity when they are working for you.

I spend a lot of time in the wood and on the water in LA and WA. I always make note of trashless areas in LA and trashy places in WA...occur in similar proportions. Without hunting clubs, most private lands in LA would be garbage dumps.

Whe turning into my driveway last night, somebody had thrown an entire McDonald's meal bag on my street. Pissed me the frick off. Now I gotta go out there and pick it up. My garbage can was still on the street. The dumbass could have stopped and put it in my can but no. I hate litterers.

I live on the corner of two highways, one with a stop sign to get onto the other. At the stop sign I pick up literally THOUSANDS of cigarette butts every year.

My "get home from work" routine is: park truck, put kid inside, go get mail, pick up trash in yard. Every day!

When I was younger my parents would make us participate in trash bash/adopt-a-road type things. Know what it taught me? FRICK people that litter, that's what!

None of my family toss anything out of the window with he exception of a Nannette peel or apple core. My dad was adamant about that as well.
Litterers are just lazy people who don't want to take the extra time to pack up their trash. That's the bottom line.

It was like that over much of the country until Ladybird Johnson's road beautification movement in the 60's & 70's. It just never caught on in much of LA. Though overall, LA has greatly improved since those days...you should have seen it in the 70's.

Lazy and trashy people are what the are, regardless of where they live.
