This list was compiled by CBS Sports last spring (3/2012) and it's no surprise given the state of college basketball today that no national champion after Kentucky's 1996 championship squad made the cut.

LINK

When I think back to the level of basketball played in previous national championship games between the likes of a UNC squad that featured James Worthy, Sam Perkins and a freshman Michael Jordan vs Georgetown's Patrick Ewing and Co. or Duke vs the great UNLV teams, etc. etc, it's apparent today's NCAA basketball has fallen on bleak times.

Great read. 90% of the list is UCLA. As far as No. 1 1976 Indiana the first thing that popped into my head when I read Kent Benson was "isn't that the guy who's antics caused Bird to transfer to ISU?"

last year's Kentucky team could make a strong case for being top 16...

How the hell is 2007 Florida not even in the bracket? I know quality has dipped, but not that much.

Back then everyone had 3-4 year starter stars.

Florida only looked great b/c they were one of the few with returned stars.

The game has changed. You just can't compare...Kareem and Walton being there 3 years...NBA legends and GOATS who stayed in college and dominated.

'68 UCLA is probably the best ever. Unreal team against quality future NBA competition before dilution and one and dones.

I would take 2005 UNC and 2012 UK over 07 Florida personally. They were really good, but 91 UNLV would maul them.

no way in hell. Florida 07 and unc 09 or whatever year that was are far and away the best recent teams. But you're probably right about unlv though. That's a bit before my time but everyone I've met who watched them has said they were the best team they've ever seen.

It's hard to compare old teams with teams within the last 20-25 years because the three-point line has fundamentally changed the style of play and how teams are assembled.

01 Duke > Florida's 2 titles
09 UNC > Florida's two titles.

I agree with the other poster. In 06 they had an easy road to the championship IMO. That UCLA team was good but outmatched in size. In 07 they had a much tougher road but the experience carried them.

yeah, sorry, I just don't see Florida on that level. Here's anther team I forgot, 94 Arkansas. I would take them all day over 07 Florida.

I was thinking more of teams beyond 1997 that should be included as one of the best 16 teams ever. It's crazy that a list of the best teams ever does not include a single team in the past 15 year. Especially one that won back to back titles.

2001 Duke was pretty great as well. They beat a Maryland team that would win the title next year, only the 01 team had Steve Francis on it (I think, I don't wanna check).

I'm not surprised they don't have a recent teams and you are one that agrees with me that the quality of CBB has declined. But even in the last 15 years, I don't see Florida as the best team. Frankly the best team since 96 UK was 99 Duke, but they lost to UConn. 99 Duke and 91 UNLV are easily the 2 best teams that didn't win it all.

And Francis was not on the 01 Md team, he was drafted in 99.

UF was unreal as a unit. They didn't have a roster filled with NBA superstars, but those top 6 guys coming back for their senior year was pretty unreal.

I wouldn't bet against them in many games against other top teams other than ridiculous UCLA teams.

'08 kansas better than both those teams if you look up the objective stats. i can make a great subjective case for it as well.

I know it sounds like I'm just gratitiously bashing Florida, but I can think of several teams that didn't win the tourney that I'd take over them

91 UNLV
99 Duke
83 Houston

ive done heavy research on those exact three teams because for some reason kansas '08 gets skipped over. i know my username will get in the way, but i encourage everyone to give them a look. i guess that's all ill say about it to avoid being called shite before anyone even makes a valid argument either way.

Thanks for your comments. I'm glad to see it's not my imagination that the state of college basketball has declined ALOT over the past decade and a half.
