re: School Cancels Honors Night to Avoid Hurt Feelings

Principle needs to give the Fight Club speech - "Listen up, maggots. You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You're the same decaying organic matter as everything else. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact."

re: School Cancels Honors Night to Avoid Hurt Feelings

quote:

Did anyone else read the article? Kids in the UK are banned from having best friends in school.

How do you get that from this?

quote:

"I have noticed that teachers tell children they shouldn’t have a best friend and that everyone should play together," U.K.-based psychologist Gaynor Sbuttoni told The Sun. "They are doing it because they want to save the child the pain of splitting up from their best friend. But it is natural for some children to want a best friend. If they break up, they have to feel the pain because they're learning to deal with it."

I agree that it's stupid though.

Another attack on excellence. You can't bring everyone up. That's a fact, but you can bring everyone down. Equality through mediocrity.

Because I actually clicked the link.

LINK

Russell Hobby, of the National Association of Head Teachers, confirmed some schools were adopting best-friend bans.

Pretty sure elsewhere in that article it said that teachers go as far as making sure kids are playing in large groups. But damn Toddy, it was the first line of your quote after your own question.

I view it this way. I'm competing against everyone else I make money. These kids are going to be useless pussies who will never make anything of themselves. Therefore it's one less obstacle for me. So keep it up liberals. Forward.

Dude, really. Don't be that guy who's an internet badass.

And yes, the principal is an idiot. It's stupid to cancel an honors night. It's disrespectful to the kids who have achieved something.

That said, I probably won't give a rat's arse about the issue as soon as I finish this post. The incident isn't representative of the norm in spite of some of our resident doomsayers.

This is true, but I have to have something to exert faux rage at on a quiet night. Stop being a party pooper.

This pussification of America has got to end. We should be teaching our kids that everyone is created equal, but you cannot guarantee equal outcomes. Our kids are growing up thinking that they can do anything they put their minds to. It is BS, you can only do what you have the drive to do. You don't put in the work, you will not succeed. Period.

I'd like to interject the current statement from the principal as shown on the School's website.

quote:

PRINCIPAL'S STATEMENT
Ipswich Middle School is dedicated to high achievement in every facet of our students' lives. We did not cancel honors recognition as erroneously reported by FOX News Boston. We changed our Honors Night from an exclusive ceremony at night to an all-inclusive ceremony during the day in the presence of the entire student body. During this ceremony we will honor those who have excelled in academics, in athletics, in the arts and in the related arts. Any reports to the contrary are incorrect.

FWIW

So the principal did not quote this which was attributed to him?

quote:

"The Honors Night, which can be a great sense of pride for the recipients' families, can also be devastating to a child who has worked extremely hard in a difficult class but who, despite growth, has not been able to maintain a high grade-point average," Fabrizio penned in a letter to parents.

I don't know. Frankly, I suspect the entire original story is true and what I'm seeing on the school website represents serious crawfishing.

That's exactly what I suspect is happening.

There is a horrible trend towards standardizing around the lowest common denominators in our society and schooling is possibly the most obvious example. There was a thread (here in PT I think) on the common core curriculum wave that is a prime example.

If interested, there's a great book (and probably lots more that I haven't read) on how to combat this and touches on this issued titled "Mindset". It's about having a fixed vs. growth outlook and I'd suggest it for anyone, but especially those raising and influencing children.

I think it's an excellent life lesson those kids are learning at a young age. If you work hard and achieve, some panty waist government dweeb will frick you out of your reward.
