My mom owns a CX-7 but that's not the same so I doubt that helps you.

Wife owned a 2007 Mazda 3 and it was a great car. Tried to convince her to get a CX-9, but sure bought a GMC Terrain instead (mistake)

I test drove that, a pilot, and a highlander. CX-9 was the best ride. Handled like a car. But with that you get poor gas mileage.
I ended up with the highlander.

Why was the Terrain a mistake?
BTW OP I have a Mazda 6 myself. Neither me or my mom have had any issues with our Mazda vehicles, but she drives hers like a grandma.

I like the higlander, but the price is just a little out of my range right now. We have a little one on the way and need more room than the small car we have now.

this is also completely unresponsive, but i'm waiting impatiently for the CX-5 DIESEL to come to the US. One of the best all around cars ever made.

If this will be your only child for a while you may want to look at either the CX-5 or CX-7. I have heard really good things about the CX-5. Great gas milage too.

It's big selling point is gas mileage. Supposedly 23/27 when we bought it.
4 cylinder in that vehicle is woefully underpowered. Probably the slowest accelerating vehicle I have ever driven. Gas mileage is more like 20/25 even with eco mode.
Cons:
Leather seats get uncomfortable in long rides
Terrible acceleration
Console is too busy and confusing, door unlock button near ac controls
Gas not much better than 6 cyl
PROS:
Standard back up camera
Standard remote start
Power lift gate

My mother has one and it is a very nice car. No issues with it whatsoever. I think she has had it three years.

I noticed this too when I looked inside one at the dealership one day. It's been a couple of years though because that's the day I bought my truck.

I had one as a rental recently and you are correct about the power. They are total dogs and we were only getting 1-2 mpg more than my bigger, AWD, 6 cylinder Highlander.
I found the interior to be cramped as well.
