I was just about to post that quote

I mean, most of the players in baseball will play basketball and football over baseball, that's just a fact.

Why? They play the sport that bests interests them and obviously it isn't baseball. I don't see it as a problem. Few play hockey either.

Baseball has changed over the decades though, and it is becoming more like tennis or golf in that parents with money send their kids to camps, play travel ball etc. It's not just developed on the playgrounds anymore. Most of the black players in the big leagues come from places where baseball is a way of life, a year around sport. That isn't the case in the US unless you can afford it.

This is correct. Look around the S.E.C. and at the teams in the College World Series every year. Blacks are few and far between. It's demographics. Has nothing to do with racist college baseball coaches trying to keep them out.

That's not close to what the writer of the column said.

What a hack. Who gives a frick. As if coaches are not recruiting black players and intentially not putting the best product on the field just because they are racist. These idiots need to GTFO.

Imagine the outrage in the black community had this piece been on the fading amount of white players in college football and college basketball.

doubt there would have been much outrage.

article was pretty good for the most part, tried too hard at times though IMO.

The real question should be 'where are all the Hispanics in college baseball?' They are becoming quite predominant in the majors.

These comments are rediculious. You never hear the same loud mouths complaining about the lack of white basketball players or the small amount of white football players on the football team.

Because they can sign at 16 with an MLB, why go to high school much less college if a team will throw 30-50k at you (about 3 to 4 times a yearly salary for many)

I know two things:

1. You didn't read the article
2. You can't spell

That's a very ignorant question. As someone else alluded to, players in the carribean can sign with MLB teams at age 16 (players in the US can too, it just takes a little more juggling, see Bryce Harper). Prior to age 16, most of those players are already in baseball academies set up by MLB teams. They aren't given a traditional education, but they are educated while practicing baseball, etc. No point in recruiting those countries, because you wouldn't be able to get those kids into school anyway.

Cuba and Puerto Rico are different. Cubans play in their pro baseball league and in their national system until it makes sense for them to defect politically. No sense in recruiting there, as the political hurdles would be way too much to overcome. Puerto Rico, being a part of the US but in the Carribean is kind of the best of both worlds. They have baseball academies, but they aren't run by MLB teams, and the players there have to go by US draft rules. Their baseball academies are run more like high schools making them recruitable players. A majority of their top level guys still sign pro out of HS after getting drafted, but there are a lot of schools that recruit the island pretty hard. LSU had a signee from there that ended up going pro.

I am not a Dale Brown fan, but I do admire what he did for Lyle Mouton when he was playing both sports for LSU. He told Lyle & his family that " there are a lot of 6'5" guards in the NBA, but there are few to none 6'5" baseball players in MLB". Lyle promptly quit basketball & went on to be a star at LSU & played many yrs in the pros.

There is a lack of white running backs. Someone please write about this.

It was actually a pretty good and un-biased piece. Simply stated that there are few-to-no black college baseball players and gave reasons why. Wasn't critical of LSU at all. If anything it shed a good light on LSU.

I love all these defensive whities getting all up in arms over a piece they didn't even read.

Every athletic white kid now is a superstar baseball player. At least in their parents eyes.

I agree with this. We have been playing select ball for a long time and have noticed there are a handful of black players for every 200 hundred total players.

It does make it easy to figure out who didn't read it.

My first post in this thread I admitted to not reading it, but made some of the same points the article did, using different examples. All the article did is point out what is happening. I kind of skimmed it, but it didn't seem to imply that there was a problem, just highlighting an interesting shift.

The fact people post links to articles they don't even read on here is incredible. Either that or the OP has a 3rd grade reading level. And to everyone saying "YOU COULDN'T WRITE ABOUT HOW WHITE PEOPLE DON'T PLAY BASKETBALL OR FOOTBALL" that's just wrong. There's definitely been articles about that. There's a big difference between saying there's a problem with most participants in a certain sport being of a certain race, or being curious about the social, cultural, and sometimes physical reasons that's the case

ETA: I don't think the writer is race baiting at all, but just based off the reactions in this thread, if I was an aspiring sports journalist I would race bait/Jason Whitlock the shite out of my articles. Look at the pub this is getting
