| Negotiating salary for first job (Posted on 3/5/13 at 9:51 pm)
Has anyone had success negotiating salary straight out of school? If you could go back how would you approach it? Engineering field if it matters.

Do you actually have more than one offer?

Just go with the base and expect a 5% raise the following year.

Did you go to M.I.T.? If so, write a figure on a piece of paper.

Whatever you do, be forceful and make some joke about screwing his wife. Bosses respect that and it sets precedent.

Starting to look like I might. Not all in the same field though. I don't want to settle for the lower end of what is reasonable if I feel that they will work with me.

Me: *looks at paper* Me: Are you serious? HR Guy: Well, it's pretty stan.. Me: *interrupting* Listen here *forgets his name for a second* BRIAN, this is an insult. I'll be back tomorrow at 8. Talk to your superiors. If I'm not impressed I'm walking out. Me: Show me that you want me. Good day.

Think long term. Pick the job, regardless of pay, that will be more beneficial down the line.

But do you think a company would get pissed if you wanted 5-10% more to start? I feel like I am cheating myself if I take the first offer but I don't want to lose an offer either

I guess that's a good point. If I do work, the pay should follow

most likely if it is your first job out of college there is no room for negotiating unless you had a pretty sweet summer intership. Just take what is offered after a few months/year your super will acknowledge your effort and offer you a raise

Did you co-op with them? Do you actually have another offer you're interested in?

well. if you are hurting for money then take it. how long have you been looking? did you just graduate this past fall? it's been 3 months and you are just getting your first offer then you may want to heavily consider it. if you are graduating this spring and you are getting your first offer, well there might be a reason they are offering it so quickly.

No. I don't graduate until the fall so I still have one more summer to intern.

Only one offer as of right now. I have had multiple interviews and still have a few more this month. I'm hoping to get a few more phone calls if all goes well.

or you may be thankful to have a job later because people are being laid off due to lack of projects.
