| Taking the Plunge- Coaching 11-12 year old baseball (Update page 4) (Posted on 3/5/13 at 7:25 pm)
Ok, so I lived baseball from the age of 5 to 22. Played from t-ball through college and have coached at every level from 9-10 through college.....but I haven't touched or looked at a baseball in 15 years until I was approached to take on a city league 11-12 year old Ripken Major 70 team this year. The first issue is that I don't have a kid in the league. That seems to be causing mass confusion. I wouldn't think that would be an extraordinarily rare thing, but apparently it is in this league. Among other issues regarding that, I asked the poor rec director about how the draft would work and he went through this spill about assigning points to the coaches sons and assistants sons and so on. Then he realized I didn't have a son playing. You would have thought he was taking a damn quantam physics final trying to figure out how he was going to work around that. Regardless, I'm 100% comfortable and confident in the baseball part. That being said, does anyone have recent experience on what to expect from the kids and parents in this age group? My daughter is way younger than this, and from what I hear, things are not they were in the late 1980's when I was playing youth ball. Any help or suggestions are appreciated I know, I know TL:DR

Like every other age group. They all want their kids leading off and playing SS.

Kids are kids-love them and they will love you back. Parents will be the problem. Just always put the TEAM first and you will survive the parent problems. Good luck.

Since you've been away from it for a while be prepared to micromanage the ever living shite out of the parents. First thing I suggest is to have a team meeting with the parents only to make sure you're all on the same page. Set very strict rules and stick to them. No parents talking to their kid in the dugout or on the field. Let them know you're not their to waste your time. Eta: and Godspeed.

So its political screw that. The player whose dad coaches best friends get more playing time. Hated this about the little leagues.

In 11-12 year old leagues I would personally rather someone with your background and expierence coach my son rather then some slap dick weekend warrior that doesn't know shite about baseball. Let those guys coach the 5-6, and 7-8 year old leagues.

Sound advice but I've found this to be way more effective with my travel teams than League yo-yo's.

Fix this BEFORE going in there or you'll be screwed right off the bat. (no pun intended). Some kind of "Coach's option" will be needed to ensure a level playing field.

Hate to burst your bubble but all playgrounds are political these days. Deal with it.

parents will be 95% of the problem. either you're practicing too much, too little, not correctly, too soft, too hard, wrong days, wrong time, and on and on. Godspeed to you. also, I think all little league teams need to be coached by people who do not have a kid playing.

Especially in the 9-14 year old leagues unless you are a high school baseball coach or former MLB and your coaching your sons team.

When I called my "assistant" (the 70+ year old dad of my old college roomate who played 1st base for us) his first response was, "Boy, you're just a glutton for punishment."...lol
