so the books have been cooked on unemployment for a while now...

We have been hearing of artificially low unemployment rates for years, and especially this last year. How much would youbet that after the sequester, we see the unemployment rate doctored upward a bit for optics? They have some wiggle room, as the numbers have been artificial for a while.

This is actually a great theory by the OP.

The King today stated anything wrong with the economy is now the Repub's fault as well.

Since they've been lying about unemployment rates being "good" (8 is the new normal that we should be happy with since a D is in the WH), perhaps the true numbers will start to come out so the R's can take the blame for that Obama failure as well.

I think the numbers in the 8s have been technically legitimate because so many people have quit looking for work, i.e. out of the workforce. We may seem them dumping them back into the counts. However these numbers are easily verified by independent (or not so independent) think tanks.

86.9% of all statistics are made up....

I think what the OP may be referring to is the current definition of unemployed used in the stats. Say there are 100 people that live on a street. Of those 100 people, 92 have jobs, and 8 have just lost their jobs. Unemployment rate for that street is 8% (8/100). A year later, 2 of the 92 employed have lost their job and have been replaced by 2 of the 8 unemployed. The unemployment rate stays at 8%. Another year goes by with no change. 92 people still have jobs. 2 people have been unemployed for 1 year, and 6 people have been unemployed for 2 years. Those 6 people are now considered "out of the workforce". The unemployment rate magically drops to 2% (2/94).

I always look at the U-6 report because I feel it gives me a better idea of what's going on in the job market, especially with underemployment.

They fake the unemployment numbers by not including the discouraged(quit looking for work). I think they can throw some of that group back into the unemployment pool to tick the 8.1% up to 8.2, 8.3 or higher so they can blame republicans.
