I tend to like the aesthetic of four kids in a garage. Music is meant to be shared, it is communal. It is not the domain of a select few who then bestow us with their presence of their greatness. So I tend not to like virtuosos or anything like that. I like dirty rock n roll that can be made by four kids in a garage. Preferably on a broken amp.

Drums - because I'm a drummer - first and foremost. But besides that, the song structure, the melody, the hook...all of that, and then the singer last. I can play just about any song I listen to on the drums (for the most part), but couldn't tell you the first lyric. If I get around to learning the lyrics, I must really like the song and the artist.

If the drummer is real basic playing cheesy straight rock and roll 4/4 beats and/or shitty...forget it.

I play many instruments, but I'm not the best drummer so I tend to layer simple beats to create complex polyrhythms. Makes me sound like I'm better than I actually am.

John Bonham was the master at this.

I learned to appreciate the different layers of music through studying the dense catalog of Nickleback.

I don't think it has anything to do with a predisposition at all, and everything to do with culture. As a musician myself, I'm convinced that we are influenced by everything that we hear from our favorite music to the melody your doorbell chime plays. And, what we hear is predominantly driven by culture.

That's why Indian music sounds like Indian music, African like African etc. After all you don't see many hair metal bands out of Zimbabwe do you?

To me what makes someone a real musician is the ability to take the way they have been cultured and the music that entails, blend that with other influences, and spit out their own take on the whole thing.
excellent point.

i grew up on my parents music and i know that the classic rock/country helped steer me the direction i went, but now my dad hates most of my music. he accuses me of liking songs that will never be played on the radio, which is possibly true, but i don't know for certain because i only turn it on for the minute and a half when my ipod is resetting.

I'd take that as a compliment. The industry is changing and for many the "radio" is obsolete. People want more than what the handful of artists radio executives have approved can provide, and with the internet consumers have it.

It could be a number of things for me.

The obvious one is the melody, and that's the reason I like the vast majority of the songs I do. Lyrics can make me like a song, with no regard for the melody (and sometimes in spite of it), if its a song that I can relate to. Every now and again, I'll find a song that might as well have been written about me and I love those.

I'm also a sucker for a certain persons voice. It doesn't really matter what they sing, or the music they sing it to. It's just that they're singing. I've fallen victim to a number of songs that I can't really admit to liking because of this.

Jay Farrar. I could listen to him sing VCR instructions.

For me, that voice y'all are talking about is Mark Lanegan.

I was thinking more along the lines of memory, attention span, musical aptitude, etc. There are many genetically controlled traits that could color musical tastes.

I respond to a lot of different things about music. It can be a great rhythm that makes me want to dance, great lyrics that I identify with because they touch my heart, amuse me, engage me, surprise me, make me cry, make me smile, make me say, "Me, too!" or "Hell yeah!"

Some music puts me in my head (or in the bed) and some music puts me on the dance floor. Sometimes I'm the lead singer. I don't think I can define what it is about the songs I like, except that I respond to them.

My musical taste is eclectic. Really, across many genres. I grew up hating Cajun music. It was the music of my grandparents. Chank-a-chank. I loved Motown and rock-n-roll. As an adult, I LOVE Cajun music, zydeco music, some top 40, classic rock, alternative, country. Not heavy metal. It doesn't touch my heart or my soul. I can't relate to some of the instrumental music that my 25 year old son loves, but that's the way it's supposed to be, isn't it?

i don't think there's any rhyme or reason to what i do or do not like, but usually, the lyrics are a big draw for me...btw, i agree with you on the deftones...i love them, but i prefer the songs where chino's voice has that melodic, dreamy quality.

Usually the music will have a 'soul'. It does something to me that I really cant explain. Thats how I know I will like it. I have a huge variety in the music I listen to. EDM to folk and blues, even classical and jazz.
