I know everyone in being optimistic for the future always says we have "tons of cap space", but do you think we can get anyone to come to the NOLA pelicans? The FA's next year are not that great....Benson is getting older and we need to make a splash next year but who is really out there that can put us in the playoffs and wants to come here? I think Benson wants to win yesterday. Anybody that can give examples of what they realistically think our team can look like next year?

Having that much cap space allows us to make trades without sending any contracts back to the other team, which is especially useful with the tax penalties getting harsher. We aren't limited to just the FA's, guys like Deng, Granger, Wilson Chandler, etc... will be available for fairly cheap.

Without Lopez the team should have $19.5 million in cap space, with Lopez it would be $15.5 million.

And those types of moves are probably more likely. The Hornets window of contention is too far away to attract most of the top FAs. All the previous FA hope earlier in the year was based on a healthy Eric Gordon making this a near playoff team.

I think you'll see a bevy of smaller steps forward this year. It just isn't the year to try to make a leap with the dearth of talent available.

its more like 23mil without lopez and 19mil with. we do not need a sf like the board is talking. we are in great shape. if we were to bring in a top center, that would suck up most of the 23mil. i say 23 cause with an upgrade at center, we don't need lopez as a reserve for 5mil. jason smith is the better option here. lets say we give 18-20 to a center. we're still 3-5mil under the cap. bring back aminu with most of that. he's earned a spot here. now here's a trick! if we can somehow flip e-go for an all-around productive pg or sg, we will still be under the cap with a strong starting line-up. the we can use a little over-the-cap money for backups.

Have to factor in that we'll probably pick up 2 or 3 of those other options since they're so cheap (~$1.5m) plus $2-3m (more if we are in the top 3) for the draft pick.

You have to place cap holds to get the roster up to 12

quote:

A cap hold called an "incomplete roster charge" if the team has fewer than 12 players (players under contract, free agents included in team salary, players given offer sheets, and first round draft picks). This charge is equal to the rookie minimum salary for each player fewer than 12. For example, if there are 11 players included in team salary, then an amount equal to the rookie minimum salary is added to the team salary2; if the roster is completely empty, then 12 times the rookie minimum salary is added to the team salary. This charge only applies during the offseason.

LINK

The minimum salary is going to be $490k next season. Without Lopez and assuming you don't bring back the scrubs on their original deals you need 6 roster holds which ads up to about $3 million. It also costs $500k to dump Lopez, so that eats $3.5 million of your cap space. It'd actually be more than that because we'll likely keep our draft pick and Darius Miller, so 2 of those $490k holds will be $788k for Miller and $2 - $3 million for a top 10 pick.

I think the chances of not picking up Lopez' option are pretty slim at this point. He has proven himself worth $5M. At the very least we pick it up to move him, but he'll still count until he is moved, so the space doesn't exist yet.

If we pick up options on Lopez, Roberts, Miller, and Thomas, we have about $11.5M under the cap with holds. If you decline the options on Roberts, Miller, and Thomas, you only free up about $992k.

I don't expect us to pick up all 3, but it's possible.

The only reason you dump him is in the unlikely event of a CP3 return. And considering the structure of the contract and not needing to pick up the option until about 4 days after FA starts, that's exactly what Demps had in mind. Get a big fish or keep Lopez.

I didn't know that. I assumed it had to be picked up before the end of this season.

eta - So he would basically be a $1M cap hold while we still hold his rights at $5.5M?

Let them. I laugh at Marcus Banks.

Anything else to add to a discussion about the basketball marketplace or do you just want to nit-pick using outdated examples and hope no one notices your lack of actual points to make?

We couldn't trade him until the option date was upon us (notoffficially), so the cap hold is the salary.

Also, the pick will have about a $2m hold, depending on the pick we get. It equals the 100% scale amount, not they 120% they normally sign for.The salary replaces the hold when the player signs. No roster charge there.

I think it's probably a $5 million cap hold but Demps should be able to get it off the books by saying he won't pick up the option. So making room for a big fish should be no problem as long as it happens quickly.
