Should Brees take a Brady-type deal to free up Salary Cap room?

When Brittany starts making 50 million a year, then yes.

That would be ill advised. I am not a fan of pushing debt in the cap world. Loomis has already done a lot of that, and now we are seeing the tail end of some of that with Harper, Ellis, and Vilma.
The Brees contract, being how large it is, would really put a hurt on the team in coming years if it was pushed off til later. My top concern for next year is the Jimmy Graham contract.

This article might help you about restructuring his contract.

The Saints are roughly 10 million dollars over cap. The deadline to get under the salary cap is March 12th, the start of free agency and the new league year.
Wonder where they're getting the $10m from. Last I checked we were ~$17m over. If it were just $10m, we could clear that just by cutting Smith and designating him a post June 1 cut (would clear exactly $10m). I think that they're wrong, though.

i understand how it works. thats why we shouldnt restructure him right now. its only going to complicate us in a year or so.
so like i said, take the hits for a year or two, then restructure.

i think we'll certainly restructure him a bit with a signing bonus

Brees should restructure to help the team given that he held out from an $18/19 Million contract because he had to have that $20 Million. Then he proceeded to have some pretty horrific games throwing Int's like crazy. His comments "that wasn't me out there". Well guess what Breesus, that was you out there, and you didn't deserve that extra million you held out for.

He did deserve it. Hopefully he Bradys move will open his eyes to the possibility of taking a hit to win another championship. I personally think he will do it.

Brady didn't restructure. It's just a contract extension. Essentially a 3-year deal that starts in 2015 after his current one expires. He'll be age 38-40 during the contract making 9 mil a year. Don't see how it should send a message to Brees about anything. The 2 situations aren't remotely close. Brady didn't sign that extension to help the patriots. He's trying to make some money in what will probably be the twilight of his career. Good move for him to sign the extension now before his skills diminish.

Hes lowerin his cap hit which saves them 30 million in cap space over the next 2 years and if he had hit the market during those 3 years, his value would be two or 3 times the rate that he will be get paid to play for the Patriots during those years
Brett Farve at 40 was still getting 20 plus a year. To say hes not cutting some of his own potiential earnings is short sided and its deffinitly a restructure as well as an extension

I hope we cut him and put Chaz Danielz in

no his contract is already backloaded. This would only make things worse later on. Only way would be to sign him to an extension and I dont see them doing that.

thought the Boston Herald had a definitive story-
He went from $30 million in guaranteed money to $57 million in guaranteed money, all of which he would receive even if he suffered a career-ending injury tomorrow. Take one for the team? Not really.
Basically this is an accounting ruse that gave Brady more money, the team more cap room and his teammates less room to maneuver. The move significantly reduces Brady’s cap number, saving the team $15 million in cap dollars while costing them real dollars and all but guaranteed the negotiating road will be rougher for his teammates because how do you argue you should receive a contract whose cap number is higher than Tom Brady’s?
As suspected what this deal did was further enrich Brady, enhance the team’s negotiating flexibility and leverage and, knowingly or unknowingly, make it harder on his teammates to get paid market value for their services.
Mother Teresa wandering the streets of Calcutta Tom Brady is not.

I don't know why people aren't understanding this, and saying Drew needs to do this and be less selfish. They are acting like Brady cut his own money to help the team win. That's just false. It just gave him more guaranteed money. I'm not even saying Brady is bad or I blame him or any of that stuff. I'm just saying most of the public seems to be fooled by this and are acting like Tom is doing something when he really isn't. Even one of his own former teammates on ESPN, Damien Woody, said this isn't hurting Brady at all. If anything it helps him because of the guaranteed money.
