President Obama and other Democrats attempted to win support for the health-care bill by touting it as a fiscally responsible enterprise. “I will not sign a plan that adds one dime to our deficits — either now or in the future,” Obama told a joint-session of Congress in September 2009. “I will not sign it if it adds one dime to the deficit, now or in the future, period.”

Obama said he would not sign a bill that was not deficit neutral. There must be a mistake.

if it's an investment in the people who voted obama in, then we're all screwed. I don't think their future productivity will offset the initial investment.

This should be headline news, but I doubt it will even be mentioned on the back pages of most newspapers. Over 6 trillion in federal debt plus hundred of dollars out of pocket for the average citizen in a year as insurance rises to cover the goddies like 25 year old stay at home types and preexisting conditions, etc. And we're arguing now about a lousy 85 billion as if it were the end of the world. Unbelievable.

The same GAO said a year ago that the debt would explode without Obamacare. This was when they were trying to scare the SC into upholding the law. LINK Bottom line: Anything that says "government" and "accounting" should be immediately treated as a lie. Edit: It's worth noting that HuffPo carried the GAO article last year. Can't seem to find the new one there though

I think we need to define "explode". The way Washington spends money 6 trillion might not be considered an explosion anymore.

From the same guy that claimed he'd cut the deficit in half by end of this first term... It's amazing liberals still defend the guy.

Eh. He's just doing what the left wants. They all knew this was a lie from the start. Doesn't matter. Take it down from the inside. That's the goal and we are getting closer.

quote:
How is it possible that one report — requested by Sessions — conflicts so starkly with almost all other government assessments to confirm Republican talking points about the law? It’s simple: Sessions designed it that way. The Alabama senator asked the office to estimate would would happen if the cost containment provisions in the law — the Independent Payment Advisory Board, excise tax on high-cost plans, and reductions in Medicare payments to providers — are “phased out over time” while the coverage provisions remain. Unsurprisingly, the GAO concluded that if the portions of the law that were specifically designed to keep costs under control don’t go into effect, then the law won’t be effective in lowering health care costs. Sessions is touting the government expenditures included in the law — the affordability credits and Medicaid expansion — while ignoring its cost savings. The same report concluded that if “both the expansion of health care coverage and the full implementation and effectiveness of the cost-containment provisions” is sustained, “there was notable improvement in the longer-term outlook.”

Those are probably reasonable assumptions. The Medicare reduction is probably the largest. And Congress has never failed to punt on it. The cadillac plan tax will probably never be collected, as people will likely change to plans that avoid the tax. As for the death panel? Who knows.

Ohhh no. Could you toss me a link to these "govt" reports that contradict the statement the Affordable Care Act isn't going to increase debt? How can anyone think the Gov't (Repup, Dem or Other) can increase coverage to so many, lower everyone's costs and pay for the difference with only taxes and no debt...HOW can someone really think that?

When you essentially have state controlled news the chance of this seems unlikely.
