| The reconciliation of the US after our Civil War was a remarkable achievement (Posted on 2/24/13 at 1:24 pm)
that should be celebrated. Name another Civil War where the victors allowed the defeated to honor their heroes, create monuments, holidays, name towns after them, where the winners restored the civil rights to the defeated put them on their courts and enter Congress, named federal property after them. I can't think of any conflict that remotely resembles this restoration of privileges and fraternity, particularly when you consider the carnage and loss involved.

Great thread. And I think Lincoln deserves a lot of credit on pushing that agenda. It was vital for reconstruction and the country uniting again and moving forward.

Lincoln was the south's best friend after the war. A lot of senators wanted to treat the south like a conquered country and he fought that.

He tried to be you know what I mean. I think the assassination of Lincoln was actually counterproductive to getting the south back on track.

well....for starters....most of the officers were in the same military together before the war. in fact, alot of officers served in each others weddings as best man and fought on different sides of the battle field. actually, i can't even imagine going to war against ANY u.s. citizen.

Indeed, it says something about the American Spirit. Or maybe the passage of time.

What about Vietnam? They seem pretty united considering there are still lots of people that fought in the war still alive.

Last night I watched a documentary on the Liberian civil war. Hol-ee frick that shite was unreal. Cannabilism, genocide, mass rape, etc. Hell on earth. Liberia, of course, is an interesting case for us, simply because we had a hand in founding the country.

Yes, I remember the mass executions, and reeducation camps operated by the Feds after the Civil War. Saigon is not now Ho Chi Minh city, the southeners were restored to their property and civil rights, Are you an idiot or just pretending to be one?

Majority of Liberians are not descended from freemen. The ones that left America had an advantage, much like the freedmen who stayed in America.

True. I think Grant had a lot to do with re uniting the country also for this reason. Oh and February 24th (today) was the day that Andrew Johnson, Lincolns successor, was impeached.

Are you serious? The passage of time has revised what actually occurred. Confederate imagery has been eradicated and under attack since the 60's. The first 100 years after the war treated the imagery and iconography in an entirely different manner.

Lincoln was a great man that by all means simply wanted what was best for preserving the Union. He deserves an incredible amount of gratitude for the olive branch he gave the south post civil war.

Right and apparently they enslaved Africans once in Liberia. I, for one, did not know that.

I recall the footage of a Civil War soldier reunion, where Union and Confederate veterans, each side brandishing their own flags, physically embraced each other. It's wild, when you think about it. You're right that it should be celebrated, though. That unity ultimately changed the course of mankind.

CT, why do you think it was that way? Christianity? An overriding devotion to the American experiment? Why was this outcome so different? Was it just a moral realization that the right side won, and that the differences were settled and reconciled?
