Sounds like he needs to learn to play under control

If he does he could be a great guard in the NFL

That'll pay off when he has to run 40 yards.

That type of burst could be beneficial for a pulling guard though

You don't run that good of a 40 without a quick start

He'll shoot up like every year when a big guy runs well.

The combine is the worst time of year. People put way too much stock into this crap.

And we wonder why people's brains are exploding these days

These guys are too big, fast and powerful.

The NFL as we know has a shelf life of 15-20 years.

I don't follow UFC (in fact, I don't care for it at all), but I saw an interview with Dana White that I thought was interesting.

He was asked if the game is too violent. Dana said (and I am paraphrasing), "You're kidding, right? If a guy gets a concussion in the ring, he is out a mandatory six months. In the NFL, you have these freaks of nature who run sub 4.4 40's and run into each other like cars with no brakes, and then they get to play next week."

I found his perspective interesting, to say the least.

From the NFL.COM write up he's projected as maybe a second day pick

If he went in the top 15 picks then yeah, you could say that people put too much stock into it.

Well, sometimes they get it wrong too.

Great anecdote!

Now, consider how the best combine performers do in the NFL. Answer: great. Vernon Davis, Mario Williams, Dwight Freeney, Chris Johnson, Deion Sanders, Calvin Johnson, Patrick Peterson, and on and on and on.

The combine isn't the be all, end all of NFL success, but it certainly has a correlation. Otherwise, NFL experts wouldn't consider it so important.

Absolutely. Obviously, I was being fairly hyperbolic with my statement that it was "crap".

I just think it is funny that people put so much stock into 40 times for positions where it is relatively unimportant.

For many positions, I consider cone drills and shuffles to be far more important than 40 times and Bench press reps.

I never claimed to have an alternative. I just think it is funny when people lose their load over stuff like this.

I wouldn't say that a time that spectacular for that position is something that you just gloss over without giving the guy a good look.

For someone to run a 40 that quick at that size, they have to have very explosive hips. So while his straight line 40 speed isn't important, what it does tell you is he has explosive hips, an important trait for offensive lineman.
