I bought a used Ruger red label last year that I love for $900. Also look at some Winchester 101 used. They are fine weapons that can be had at a fair price.

If you aren't in a hurry good used guns can be had. Just check the auction sites often. What are you going to use it for? Weight and barrel length will vary with use...

Actually getting it as a surprise retirement gift for someone else. His wife snooped around and found out this is something he would like so can't really find his intentions with the gun without him getting suspicious.
