| 3.5% of population is gay, not 10% (Posted on 2/19/13 at 11:52 am)

Gallup released the results of its 200,000 person sample and it seems to overturn the long held assumption that 1 out of 10 people are not straight.

The data was obtained over a six-month period. Interestingly, the result of 3.5 percent was essentially consistent from state to state. In fact, every state in the nation (except D.C.) came within two percentage points of that national average.

I did an unscientific study....I asked my teenagers and wife what they thought the average was....and they all said 20-25%. Just goes to show how much influence TV has. Almost every sitcom or drama on primetime has at least one gay or lesbian character.

I guess they studied men. With women the determination of sexuality is a lot more fuzzy. IE, a lot of young hetero women get married and then discover that they are lesbians.

It's going to spread if we let it be legal then we'll be seeing 30, 40 percent within a generation. Don't act like it's not a problem because it's such a small number. They probably underestimated so people would put their guard down

At what point does procreation become an issue with gay and lesbians? or will it?

The NYT publisher made a speech before some gay rights group about 5 years ago and said 1/3 of NYT employees are gay.

And out of that estimated 3.5% there's probably a fair number who are not biologically homosexual but rather have become part of the gay lifestyle due to environment. This is what troubles me most about the normalization of homosexuality. I don't want straight kids influenced to consider homosexuality as a healthy lifestyle choice analogous to choosing a particular occupation.

How is being gay an unhealthy lifestyle?

I always figured it was closer to 5%. It's possible some of the respondents aren't being completely honest. It could be 4 or 5 percent.
