So began one of the bloodiest battles in American history. Was it necessary? I am not convinced that it was. If there are other veterans of Iwo, I would like to hear from you.

True but most of his threads are concerning WW2.

Yes, I am a navy veteran. I was a radarman but manned the phones at a debarkation station when we were loading marines in the boats. I was in a position to see our boats head for Iwo but also to see them returning with wounded marines.

You understand the skepticism regarding your claim? Not that there aren't Iwo Veterans still around, it is just that the youngest ones are 84 or 85 years old, and somewhat out of the range of people to be on a message board such as this. Using Blackbeard's real name as a screen name is somewhat of a jaunty choice for an octogenarian. Therefore, I'm not saying you aren't a WWII veteran, or a veteran of Iwo - I'm just saying that skepticism is understandable.

Thank you for your service sir! My grandfather was on a ship in the Pacific as well and after listening to his stories I have great respect for what your generation endured.

My grandfather (86) fought in the Pacific in WW2. Marine Recon. I don't think he was on Iwo but he never really talks about it. He has a purple heart, that much I know.

Uh...yeah...it was necessary. Iwo Jima provided an air base for the Japanese to intercept our B-29s on their way to bomb the home islands. It was also a safe haven for Japanese naval units in dire need of support. What's more...it was an ideal staging area for the planned invasion of Japan.

Iwo Jima was cer necessary. I believe both atomic bombs were loaded there on the B52's and tgen dropped over japan. Peleliu wasn't necessary and was just as bloody if not worse than Iwo Jima. It served no purpose in a strategic sense. It should've been cut off from supplies then starved out.

Not a big deal, but I find this a little bit of odd assertion: "Using Blackbeard's real name as a screen name is somewhat of a jaunty choice for an octogenarian." I see how one could be skeptical about a WWII vet being on TD, but I don't follow how it would be more unusual for an older person to use the name of a 18th century pirate as a handle than it would be for a younger person.

I had a great-uncle (my Dad's Godfather) who fought on Iwo. He always told me that there was so much fire on that ash heap, that if you wanted to light a cigarette, all you needed to do was hold it up in the air. He almost had his thumb taken off by a ricocheting Japanese bullet. He went back to the aid station, had it bandaged up, and went back to his platoon in the thick of the fighting. He was one tough old buzzard.

The Enola Gay was based out of Tinian, in the Marianas. It took off from and returned there for the Hiroshima mission.

if we had b-52s back then then i doubt we would have needed iwo jima but not to doubt the OP or anything but why do you think the capture of Iwo Jima was unnecessary? as suggested it provided air bases for b 29 crews and made the bombing of the homeland all that more possible but it also i feel like further broke the back of the enemy. maybe it didn't quell their effort but at that point i'm not sure any really thought they could stave off the united states. of course i think they had like a 90% death rate instead of surrendering so maybe that wasn't the case. those frickers fought hard, that's for damn sure
