Hey Guys, I am looking at maybe buying a fishing camp is South Louisiana and I had a few questions

1) Best Location? Grand Isle or somewhere more to the west (Ive seen some in Chauvin). I will probably be kayak fishing for reds mostly.

2) Costs: I was thinking between 200-250. Is that reasonable? Any hidden costs (this will be my 1st home ie. home insurance, tax, utilities etc etc). My Dad said he'd go 1/2s with me.

3) Is this even a good idea? I live in Malaysia right now so its not like Id be spending a lot of time there. Plan is to work overseas for 2 - 3 more years, year sabbatical fishing & golf, then back to work.

4) Ill be back in the States in a month or 2 so any leads to realtors or anything like that? So far Ive just been looking at online listings.

Thanks guys

I would avoid GI personally and if you are interested in red fishing from a kayak look for a place further inland.

Love GI in winter. Probably not the best spot for a kayak fisherman month in and month out. But Point au Chein is just up the road so you got options.

You can go on a lot of redfish trips out of the Chauvin area just for the insurance money you would save. For your use I'd say no unless your Dad is planning on using it a lot.

OK. Your first house is going to be a fishing camp? Cool, but probably not the most practical.

You can get a solid camp for your price range. If you are spending that much, budget in for real boat instead of a kayak. Thank me later.

For reds is suggests point aux Chenes or chaivin.

Also, how is PAC "just up the road" from GI? That's a haul.

Basons, what 20 miles? A lot of real estate to fish in between also. I drive over 100 a day so I may be off a little when I say up the rode.

No wife, no kids, no rent, nothing but savings from workin like a dog. Plus pops would go 1/2.

Its just an itch I want to scratch but ya'll have made some very good points. For the time I'll spend there it probably pays to hold off for a bit. Not like prices are going to skyrocket anytime soon.

Been all over the world and nothin quite like hookin up to a nice red.....

Check out something away from the coast. Winter/Fall fishing is incredible for trout and reds. You will aslo get more for your money than you would at GI.

Buy a boat and a kayak instead, fish anywhere you want when you're home. Having a camp to launch your kayak from is great, but definitely not worth it if all you're doing is kayak fishing. That is especially true for GI. Once the bite gets relatively slow, you'll want to bring your kayak elsewhere anyway.

Buy a lot somewhere around Leeville with power hookup. Buy an acre up on high land somewhere. Move your travel trailer between the two, depending on what time of the year it is. No need for a single man not to have options. Hell, if I was single with no kids I would probably sleep outside in my hammock every night.

My monthly payments on a camp would be like $500. If I ever needed to lay low for a while, would be a place to retreat to.

Im moving to Jakarta soon. Will do 2 or 3 years there, then it is back to La to settle down for good.

3 things I miss about the US.
-bacon
-american football
-driving my own car

GI to Basons is about 40 miles. GI to PAC by road is 70.

For what you're talking about doing, I would look for something in the chaivin/cocodrie/dulac area. From east to west you can get to PAC, montegut, chaivin/lake Boudreaux, coco, dulac relatively easily by truck. That's prime redfish areas.

Also, for $250k you can get a MANSION camp in those areas.

That's true, but remember, someone will have to look after it while you are not there. If you Dad is close and doesn't mind then go for it. Unless we get hit bad again soon the prices will only go up.
Good luck.

No way I'd go to GI. It's hard to kayak fish the marsh from GI because its an island.

Go to Chauvin or Dulac.
