About a year ago, I bought a little flat (14') with a 25 Johnson on a trailer. I was working out of town at the time, and I did it off of pictures and knowledge that the motor and trailer were good. My dad actually went and looked at it for me, and I sent him the money to get it.

Anywho, at the same time, my nephew called me about buying his 15' aluminum hull...basically a flat with a mod V entry. I gave $1200 for the boat, motor, and trailer, then paid my nephew $300 for his boat and trailer. I figured between two boats and two trailers, I could put a decent package together to go with the motor, and sell whichever one I didn't want.

So, nephews boat had some TERRIBLE modifications done before he got it, and he made it EVEN WORSE! The guy he bought it from used galvanized to brace the transom, which is totally rotten. He also had galvanized support beams holding up the front deck. Some may realize, galvanized and aluminum don't like each other. Then the deck (untreated painted 3/4" plywood!!) was fastened with WOOD SCREWS somehow?? Nephew put in a "floor" made out of 5/4" deckboards and 2X12s that supported his two pedastol seats. Thing weighed a TON by the time he put all that damn wood in it.

Long story made somewhat shorter, I HATE the way the 14' hull plows. It's a POS...very thin, flexy. I've decided to transform the nephew's boat, which is actually a decent hull, but needs a LOT of rebuilding.

Today I stripped every smidgen of wood from it, which lightened the thing by half! I've got a guy that's going to re-do the transom, and then I'm gonna weld a front deck back about 60". The front deck will have a hatch about 12"X24". The rest of the boat is wide open presently...and I'll weld a seat in the rear, leaving the middle open.

Anyone ever rebuilt a boat? I'd love some suggestions from someone who's already made mistakes lol.

As a sailor I can give you one piece of very valuable advice on fixing up old boats.

There's not a lot that epoxy can't fix. And what that can't fix, rope will.

That's all I got.

I actually thought about framing it out and using lighter wood to build the deck and seat, using epoxy over the wood to seal it and putting some awlgrip or some sort of non skid product. But I absolutely hate wood in a boat. Wood rots, and boats get wet. I know there's ways to prevent, but the best way I know to prevent wood from rotting on a boat is to use no wood. I did some mods on a canoe a couple years ago with wood, and it's holding up well. But I'm gonna go with aluminum since I've got a buddy that can do plenty with aluminum.

I forgot to mention the purpose of this boat. It's going to be used as a flats skiff of sorts. I already have the poling platform, and will put a casting platform on it when it's ready to go. I have to figure a way to mount the pushpole, and will probably put a little grab bar with an aluminum plate or small box to mount a GPS on. If I can stay home long enough to fool with it, it's gonna be a pretty tricked out little boat. On the other hand, if I go to work again sooner, I can afford to really trick it out, or just pull the damn trigger on a little flats skiff lol.

I would just pay someone to weld in a new front deck out of alummun and add a small deck at the transom to were you can put batterys and fuel tanks. For the floor, buy a sheet of 1/8" alummun, rivet it down to the ribs. Before doing that, get some sheets of close cell foam to put inbetween the ribs for floatation.

Spray or roll on bed liner on the decks and floor.

No, don't wanna pay someone to do it. If I was gonna do that, I'd just wait around and buy what I want. I want a project to play with and fix up how I want. Like I was saying, I have a friend that welds aluminum. I'm rebuilding it with his assistance, but I'm coming up with the design.

Battery is going in the front. I need weight there to balance the motor and poling platform, so the it floats level in skinny water. I like the idea of the Rhino lining and will definitely install the foam. I'll post a pic eventually, but this hull already has the sides with foam in them.

Here's a pic of the hull after I stripped everything out but the transom.

Transom bolts removed. Lots of corrosion, transom fairly rotten.

I have an old poling platform that fits this boat perfectly. Obviously, that's not the rear deck I'm going with. Just something to check the angles on the platform.

First thing to be added is going to be a new transom, which should be completed in a few days.

Transom is OUT! I was trying to think of an easier way to do this. GRINDER! The problem was all the corroded nuts and bolts and screws going thru the transom, which responded nicely to a 5" angle grinder.

I also used a reciprocating saw to dispatch of the corroded transom brace, and once that was out of the way, the remainder of the transom came out with a little pressure with a pry bar.

So what I figured would be the worst part is over! Now I'll use the angle grinder with a wire brush attachment to get rid of some of the corrosion, replace the transom wood, and bring it to my friend who will weld up all the holes in the boat that need to be welded.

More to come...
