This is similar to asking "What are the 20 best STDs to contract?"

Top 20? How about 10.... 1) Abraham Lincoln - Won Civil War 2) Thomas Jefferson - Biggest Accomplishment: Louisiana Purchase 3) Franklin Roosevelt - His Domestic Policy Legacy sucks but WWII makes up for a lot 4) George Washington - Defined Office of Presidency, Peaceful Transition to Adams 5) Ronald Reagan - Won Cold War, Laid foundation for Economic Success in 90's and into next century 6) James Madison - Held country together through War of 1812 7) Harry Truman - Finished WWII, Laid groundwork for Cold War 8) James Polk - Expansion 9) James Monroe - Monroe Doctrine 10) Theodore Roosevelt - I'm not a huge fan but no question he had a major impact Honorable Mention: JFK (mostly for Cuban Missile Crisis), LBJ (mostly for Civil Rights Act), Bill Clinton, Calvin Coolidge, Andrew Jackson

I think Jackson is a lot like Obama actually. Obama is important because he's the first black President and it appears he may have fused in iron an electoral coalition of women, young voters, minorities and homosexuals. Likewise, Jackson fused together an electoral coalition of poor whites who elected a man that for the first time wasn't a rich Virginia plantation owner or an Adams from New England. And while Jackson can't compare to Obama in terms of racial significance, there is a parallel in that Jackson was riding on his previous reputation, namely his war heroism. But in terms of accomplishments, I think he's slim. He eliminated the national debt but it was his own stubborness on a national bank that caused an economic panic and wiped out his accomplishment on the debt. He did do well on the Nullification Crisis, but otherwise what he's best known for is Indian Removal. Even if you cut him slack by saying it was a different time, it's not exactly a banner accomplishment. I just think when you measure him on actual accomplishments, he comes up short. He's important because at least for a time he realigned national politics. Obama is important for the same reason. That's why I give Jackson honorable mention. But I don't think he's worthy of top 10.

BTW, I think Kennedy is similar to Jackson and Obama, the great difference being that resolving the Cuban Missile Crisis and keeping the planet from being blown into smitherenes is a major accomplishment. That alone makes him Honorable Mention worthy. IMO, Clinton is a greater President than all three. His great failure is not being more aggressive against al-Qaeda, but he did build upon Reagan's economic foundation and extended it with NAFTA, welfare reform and a balanced budget. Granted the Republican Congress pushed him into the last two, but you could say that about most any President, that they were pressured by Congress into doing things.

He killed the bank and sat during the last debt free period in american history. I don't care how racist he was, if those two things had been maintained then it would have done more for those who he may have despised than all other policies combined. I can see the points about bucking the constitution as a good argument, but claims of racism in the 1800's? ETA: Jackson has long been my favorite president despite that my own beliefs are frequently at odd with some of his actions.

20 is too many. You can't help but get some shitty ones in there with that limit. You need to ask top 5 or maybe, maybe 10.

Lincoln: you must be okay with unconstitutional executive orders Jefferson and Washington: didn't really believe all that stuff they put into the declaration of independence: "all men are created equal" Reagan: big spender and amnesty All these top presidents sure had some big things in common with King Obama. I guess this list is a 10 least bad presidents That honorable mention list must be a joke, right?

We can judge presidents on many criteria. I leave it to 3 criteria, did they improve the country, keep it the same or hurt the nation. It's subjective to what you find is important. I tend to judge presidents on the merits of influencing the trajectory of Ameeica for the better.
