In soccer, a pre-deal is pretty common.

Dude has the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world quickly. If this indeed is true, Barca won't miss a beat

You can start negotiating guys with six months or less left on their contract. Although, like S said, I don't know what's up with this deal.

No it's still the same, but 'under the table' deals are worked out from time to time.

hence the letter of intent, memorandum of understanding, or 'pre-deal'.

Sounds like tapping up to me, atleast if Barca played any part in a negiotiation. M'Gladbach would have had to give Barca permission to speak to ter Stegen unless he was in the final six months of his contract, no? I suppose if he signed a 'letter of intent' to join Barca in 2015 thats ok, but I cannot imagine it to be legally binding, especially if Barca made no offer to MAtS at the time (which legally they should not have been able to).
