Been reading up on the Hero 3 and they have some less than favorable reviews. LINK
I really want quality footage, the ability to do timelapse, great slo-mo etc. Wondering how good of a camera the Hero 2 is. Anyone?
TIA

I have two 2s and upgraded the 3s. I had the 3s for two offshore trips and sold them.

What specific issues did you have with them?

Just got my silver.
If you are going to upgrade, I suggest going black. The silver is basically the Hero2 outdoor (11 megapixel camera) with built in wifi.
The wifi is pretty cool. Works well. I read a lot of the bad reviews and it appears to me it's a lot of folks who just don't know how to follow directions, as you have to upgrade your firmware when you unbox it.
You can get the Hero2 and a wifi backpack if you want the wifi.
Only the black model is a significant upgrade from the Hero2. I didn't get it because of the cost, but it comes with an included remote device that pretty much makes it worth it.
If your Hero2 doesh't shoot 11 mpxl stills or 1080 at at least 30 frames a minute, upgrade
The Hero3 black shoots 1080 @ 120 frames a minute, has a 12 mpxl camera for stills and according to reviews has much better clarity and definition. The Hero3 white would be a waste

I actually don't have a gopro at all. I'm just trying to decide between the two and wanted some opinions from someone who has had both for comparison. I might go with the silver. Appreciate it

If you want the wifi, go with the silver or black. If you don't, just go with the Hero2 outdoor.
The Hero3 white and silver are just remade Hero2 models with wifi. They were released first a few months before the black model.
The black is a true upgrade but comes with a price tag about $100 more than the silver. It does come with the included remote.
I just got mine today Hero3 Silver) and have been playing around with it, and really like it. The wifi is nice IMO. I got it for $279.00

what does having wifi allow you to do?

You can download an app or buy a remote that allows you to control every aspect of your camera via a smartphone (or remote.)
It works well for me. I read a lot of bad reviews but think people just aren't following directions.

Bought a 3 black and sent it back because it went straight to hell after an update..
that being said, I will buy another if they get the kinks worked out

So if you're in the marsh and you have your camera in your head, you can control it from your phone right there? Like see the screen shot and adjust up/down etc?

I rarely use my two, but this one has a better camera and I dig the wifi feature. Will definitely use it more.
I would get a second battery though, the battery life sucks on these things.

Hiking, skiing, kayaking. Didn't do much with the Hero2, will definitely use this more.
