So outdoor board, I'm a noob when it comes to yak fishing and to the board so bear with me. Already have an aluminum flat at my disposal to fish out of, but I'll probably move (unsure of where exactly yet) by the end of the year and not have as much access to it. So I'm thinking of appropriating some of my tax return funds for a kayak. Where should I start looking? What to look for? I'll probably be able to swing $500 or less. Used? Will I be able to carry it in a 6.5' truck bed with no issue?

Help me fellow green outdoorsman

(I'm kidding, frick Al Gore)

well you can join team ascend and get one of those or you can pick up a heritage yak from academy
both are great 's but i think that the ascend has a better seat. SOT and a good paddle are a must.
get a soft ice chest for the fish and i'd go "pick up" a milk crate from behind a local grocery store and install 3-4 pvc pipes on the back of it. the crate fits perfectly in the back of the yak and you can put all your tackle and extra rods/net in the rod holders

ETA: yes it will fit in the bed of your truck no problem. just get some ratchet straps and you'll be fine

or just get one of these

check out Bayou Coast Kayak Fishing Club for solid advice

LINK

I would check there, Craigslist and LA Sportsman for a good used kayak. You are probably looking at around $600 for something used and nice. Your truck bed will be just fine, I have a 6.5' bed and have carried 2 13'+ yaks in it. just make sure you have rope, tie downs and bungee cords.

good luck sir

I strap a pirogue back there for bow season so I figure a yak is no different.

I looked at the ascend and was leaning that way, but not sure if I should look used instead. Is it worth getting something I can stand up in? I stand up and fish 100% of the time right now unless I have the boat run up in cypress knees on top of a bream hole during the spawn. Is it hard to get used to sitting and casting?

I mostly freshwater fish but the yak would let me fish for reds a little more. Would be great for my surf trips to GI

I've never had one before. Truth be told I've never paddled one before. Looks like a pirogue with a comfortable seat though, can't e that bad.

Why isn't this going back to the top?

You won't be able to comfortably stand in a $500 kayak.

Is it hard to get used to casting that close to the water when you're used to standing?

Cool. I'm mostly bass fishing around trees with baitcasters, I'd imagine I'd get a lot of bird nests at first.

Then again I'll probably only fish marsh with it until late in the year

Personally, I couldn't stand the fact that I couldn't stand. So I sold my cheap kayak and bought one that allowed me to stand (Jackson Cuda). Some people sit all day with no problem though.

I don't know. I spent the extra $$$ to get a really stable one.
