| Braces for your kids (Posted on 2/12/13 at 3:16 pm)
Have you recently done braces for your kids? If so approx how much were they? Down payment/monthly payment? I'm trying to know what ballpark to expect. Also did you do the pre-spacing (?) process that is common now? What's the point of that?

did some for 15 year old they were about 5000 dollars. insurance paid some and my wife used an hsa account to pay the rest did not do the spacing thing. that sounds like something they made up to make more money

Did this cover the periodic adjustments and then the retainer at the end? I was just wondering how many little additional fees pop up before it's all over?

Our orthodontist in Lafayette was about $4500 or so for the 1st kid and a little more than that for #2. Actually got a "return family discount" for #2. For us, it included EVERYTHING ... visits leading up to the braces which we did for like 2 or 3 YEARS, braces, xrays, retainers, EVERYTHING. And I"m not sure what pre-spacing is. ??? He got spacers between the teeth one day and 3 days later got the braces. I assume this is NOT what you're talking about.

My son (8) has 4 brackets on his top teeth and a bottom retainer. 4 teeth pulled plus pre spacers and the total cost is $1800.

I'm not either. But I've met a few parents whose kids had them. When I asked for details they said something about not all of the kids' baby teeth were gone yet. Seems strange to me, but why not just wait till all the baby teeth were gone?? Like another poster said, seems like a money-making scheme to me

He's probably talking about expanders that are used to create a little more space for the adult teeth. Doing this tends to make an ortho case a little less complicated and take less time to finish. I would like to believe the orthos do this to better treat the child and not to pad their fees. Find someone you trust and do what they suggest. If OP is in BR I could suggest someone.

Thanks but I'm in Jackson MS. I would imagine the prices would be comparable between BR and Jackson? Thanks for explaining the expanders thing, makes sense.

i did it for my daughter, $5000.. we had them removed about half way thru the recommended time, her teeth are great. I think its a racquet, unless thier teeth are really messed up, most of the time they straighten out.

We had to spend around $4500 on braces for our son. Insurance covered $1500. We had to put 20 or 25% down on the remaining balance, then made monthly payments based on the length of time for our son's plan(20 months). No interest was charged. Our ortho offered a few different payment options. As another poster stated, this included everything.

Sounds like you aided and abetted a racket by pulling them off one year early. BTW what is your occupation? Just looking for a little more data for my thesis. TIA

If they don't have a chin. Don't get braces until your kid is 14 or so. We got my son's when he was 9 and now are on a second round. Good thing that first round wasn't a complete waste of money.

Get a second or third opinion before you do anything. I got 3 and 2 said both my kids need them and 1 said they didn't. I had 2 dental plans so I ended up getting them. I swear over the 24 month period my kids saw the ortho doctor about 5 or 6 times. Now I believe the ortho doctor who said they didn't need them was correct bc we can't tell the difference since they got them off. (BTW their teeth were pretty straigt but I was told their overbite was off).....

I bet the ortho that didn't think you kid needed braces was close to retirement and didn't think he could complete the case before he hung up his shingle.
