| South of the Border in SC (Posted on 2/9/13 at 9:46 am)
Anyone ever been to this place? I haven't but I've read about it. Appears to be one of the biggest tourist traps in the US.
quote:
South of the Border is a rest stop and roadside attraction on Interstate 95 and US Highway 301/501 between Dillon, South Carolina and Rowland, North Carolina. It is so named because it is just south of the border between the U.S. states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The rest area features not only restaurants, gas stations and a motel, but also a small amusement park, shopping (including, formerly, adult entertainment at the "Dirty Old Man Shop"), and, famously, fireworks. Its mascot is Pedro, an extravagantly stereotypical Mexican bandido. It is known for being advertised by hundreds of billboards along surrounding highways, starting over 150 miles away. Well-known landmarks in the area, the irreverent signs feature Pedro, wearing an oversized sombrero and poncho, counting down the number of miles to, and promoting, South of the Border.

Driving between D.C. and Myrtle Beach for golf you see those "Pedro sez. . ." signs for miles. Never stopped.

I figure it's one of those reptile farms Lewis Grizzard used to talk about, where some guy shaved his dog, painted him green, then charged Yankee tourists $10 a head to see an "alligator." To answer the question, "How can South Carolina be any worse?" --- put a little Mexico in it.

I went there once during my time at Ft. Bragg. If you have children in the 4 to 11 year old range, they will love it.

Used to drive by there when I lived in NC and went to Charleston. Never once had the desire to stop. Looks amazingly trashy.

When i was younger We begged our parents to stop there for years when we'd pass it... They finally gave in and we stayed one night.... We never asked to stop again

I grew up in the Charlotte area and still live here. My parents took me down there one weekend in the mid-late 90's (96-98 sometime) and it looked like they built the place in the 60's and never updated anything. Not even the pool tables. Some mexican guy tried to hustle me at pool and I'm like dude I don't even play pool.

I've been to this place dating all the way back to the late 1960's. It used to be a convenience store and a greasy spoon restaurant with a playground for kids. Now, it's a huge tourist trap. They have really built that place into something. It's worth the stop just for the fun of it.

It is not even a good place to stop and piss. They have bathroom attendants looking for a handout.

I used to read the signs when going to and leaving Camp Lejuene. My favorite sign said, "You never sausage a place." It had a huge 3D sausage under or above the phrase.
