LINK Just a little bit of horror from people elsewhere in the world.
quote:
Assailants stripped, tortured and bound a woman accused of witchcraft, then burned her alive in front of hundreds of witnesses in a Papua New Guinea town, police said Friday after one of the highest profile sorcery-related murders in this South Pacific island nation.
Interestingly enough sorcery was outlawed in 1971. Yes, I typed that correctly. They passed the sorcery act in 1971 which criminalized sorcery. Stunningly, the government has considered repealing the act because since the act was passed, there has been an increased number of attacks on people accused of black magic. I find it difficult to believe that things like this still happen, but heck, we have some people even on this board who do not believe in evolution. Ignorance is ignorance.

i'd say that's an unfair comparison, and we can pick out a number of stupid "liberal science" beliefs

Really? is that what you took away from that? Perhaps it was meant to illustrate that ignorant people are everywhere. And these people who are so willfully ignorant to ignore all the fact would be the people who if they were in new guinea would burn someone for being a witch or blow themselves up for religion if they were raised in the middle east.

This is nonsense. Many people in the U.S. don't believe in evolution and I don't see any of them burning witches. Stop trying to make outrageous reaches.

Actually I don't think it is. It has to do with people being ignorant and ignoring facts. There are no doubt people who are ignorant on the other side of the political spectrum.

Not trying to be mean here, but did you put your stupid hat on today? The fact is that a certain personality type is the type that will buy into these types of beliefs. The person who buys into the whole no to evolution is willing to overlook mounds of scientific data and hold onto a ridiculous belief. This type of personality would, if he was born in iraq, would have likely already blown himself up. This type of person also would be the type of person to burn someone for being a witch. Now I don't know how uneducated and ignorant these people in new guinea are. My guess is they are very. So they have a limited excuse. No doubt a crowd mentality took over there as well. And no, I am not saying that anyone would burn someone for being a witch here. However, you put someone who has the mental makeup or ability to disbelieve in evolution and rear them in new guinea instead of here, and damn straight, they would be following the group to burn the witch.

So you believe that evolution denial is a legitimate, mainstream belief?

It's not really obvious to me why contemporary Christians don't believe in witchcraft.
