New LT and experienced 3-4OLB Plan

Mickey wanted to know if we had any new ideas...
He will have to work some cap magic to re-sign Bushrod. He made a second Pro Bowl but we know he might be closer to average than he is elite. His last 2yr deal in 2011 was for $9.8million. That will be even higher now. Rather than commit even higher money to him how about an alternate plan?...
Go UFA Paul Kruger from the Ravens with the same money ya were gonna use for Bushmaster. Then go OT Lane Johnson Oklahoma at #15.
Get a proven product in Kruger versus the unknown of a Dion Jordan or Ansah type. He's just 26 so plenty of upside to go. He has also improved every year. Anthony Spencer Dallas is another UFA 3-4OLB available. He might like to move on since they are going to a 4-3 in Dallas. He's not as attractive to me mostly cuz he's 29
Johnson at LT seems like a much safer sure thing type pick versus a Jordan or Ansah type.
Eric Fisher rated higher than Johnson but I'm counting him as a very low chance of being around at #15.

I think you've finally broken from reality, Blues.

If we use our 1st rounder to replace one of our best players, we've not improved at all. If youre lucky, its a wash.
I think you use you early round picks to address current weaknesses, and hopefully the depth built with mid/late round picks can step in if you absolutely cannot sign bushmaster.

Do you not think Kruger's production is a little underwhelming considering the star and talent studded defense he plays with?

not if he is a better player. A dominant LT added could amp up the offense even more and provide better insurance for Breesus as he ages. Then there's money, Bushrod LT for 4yrs and say a conservative $28+million or Johnson for 4 years for $9.5million (last year's #15 deal)?

the saints are one of the stronger BPA teams in the league historically. And I'm not convinced that Galette or Wilson could be just as dynamic or even more so than a Dion Jordan who has the word "project" in almost every scouting report

Charles Brown hasn't shown us that he is anywhere near ready. Who else at LT? I don't know that any other current OTs have any potential there. LT isn't a position to ride on hope.

He was playing pretty good before going down. Hell, his backup stepped in and held his own, then he went down.

Going with a tackle or a DB in the first could bring someone like Chase Thomas into the fold in the 3rd, at rush backer.

I dunno, but recall how the Saints build their OLine - the exact opposite from the way most teams do: from the inside out. This gives the vertically challenged Brees the room to step up and deliver before the edge rush can get there.
Id hesitate on putting a premium on a tackle spot, esp if you can get an impact player for D.

at RT, a completely different beast than LT. My memory of when he had LT reps in past years is that he was embarrassed.

Left tackle HAS to be addressed one way or another. For the impact D player I'm saying get the proven product over the unknown or project player in the draft.

If you only look at stats. He has developed steadily and gotten better each year. I'd say this year his on the field performance was even better than the 9 sacks he recorded.

Man I think Id rather pay Bushrod than Kruger honestly. Keeping Brees upright if the top priority and I don't want to start messing with our rotation if we don't have to.

I agree that keeping Brees upright is priority. This is why I think Blues' idea is a decent one. Go get someone who can rush the passer that probably won't cost THAT much, at least relatively. Then go get a tackle who will probably be better than Bushrod. I know there's a chance the draft pick won't pan out, but I think it's a good chance he will. Typically, left tackles drafted in the 1st round don't do bad. Bushrod isn't bad, but he isn't that good either. He's average. I'd rather have someone protect Brees he is good, not just average.

It would be nice to keep Bushrod and move him to RT and pick a good LT with our # 15. Then go defense rest of draft.

THAT is my point. I'd rate Johnson as better than Bushrod right now. Better bang for the buck too at 1/3 or less of what Bushhog will cost.

Not too realistic. Once you get LT pay why would you accept going to RT? If not the Saints, some team will pay him $6-8mil a year to go LT.

For both the saints and bushrod would it be best for him to get the franchise tag and go out and get a bigger contract next year being the market is full of top LTs
Saints draft defensive in the first this year and get the LT in the draft next year.
Any idea on what a franchise tag on Bushrod would cost this year?

last year it was $10.7 million, not a viable alternative IMO
and someone will sign him if the Saints don't. He's 28, so a 4-5yr deal here could be his last big pay day. There are some big name LTs potentially out there. If they do move (like Jake Long) those teams will need replacements too.

$10.5m. I'm down for Lane Johnson in the first and maybe slightly overpaying an aging vet (McKinnie would be a really good option) for a year or two while Johnson plays RT for a year (he played both LT and RT at OU). I think we can find a solid project at OLB in the 3rd, not so easy with a LT, even though we're great at drafting OL in the mid rounds. There's a chance LJ isn't even there at 15, though. He had a good senior bowl.
ETA: Lacanforna has it at 9.8m in 2013.
