"The Talk" seeks $1 million in film welfare for $870,000 in La temporary jobs

Seems the talk show "The Talk" has been broadcasting from New Orleans leading up to the Super Bowl. According to an article this morning in the Times Picayune they qualify for $1 million in film industry welfare and they supposedly employed 140 Louisiana workers for 29 days and spent $2.4 million total.

Of course those people are now out of work and of course the show would have probably broadcast from here without the welfare but none the less taxpayers are going to give them welfare.

Let's just take a conservative look at these numbers. Let's assume the 140 people will actually pay taxes--they may not if this is all they work since on an average they got only about $5900 for this work. Let's assume the other $1.53 million was all sales taxable and generated a whopping 50% profit for the vendors and is thus income taxable. The total tax take for the state would be $52000 in taxes on the wages, $61000 in sales taxes, and $45,900 from the income tax on the liberal profits we assume.

That is a total revenue from taxes of $158,900 or a total loss for Louisiana taxpayers of $841,000.

Sort of hard to comprehend that a corporate subsidy this rich would generate 5-6 times more indirect tax revenue than direct isn't it? "The Talk" will take down their temporary stages this weekend and will go back to New York with our money.

No way possible this welfare is good for Louisiana tax payers. We would have been better off to take the $1 million and just give it to the 149 temporary workers. At least it would have stayed here and they would have made $130,000 more.

There is another thread on the first page started by you about your unreasonable hatred of the la fim industry. You really needed another thread to show everyone this?

What is it I don't get???

You guys are for the welfare and I am not.

You think giving the show "The Talk" a million dollars of taxpayer money for almost no return is good and I do not.

This thread is a specific example of how we are being abused. The other thread it about the hypocrisy of a governor calling himself fiscally conservative while supporting this corporate welfare and ethanol subsidies and mandates. Another thread is on extent of the abuse relative to tax collections.

Ah CBS the network making an assload of advertising revenue today is seeking a handout. I, from the bottom of my heart say to them do you know what a one finger salute is used to examine.

I've never looked at the numbers, so someone do me a favor and tell me if they've been paying more attention than I have. Does Louisiana make money or lose money, net wise, on film industry tax credits?

What more do you need than the OP?

The film industry uses some fantasy numbers their paid economist makes up to say they work but several other groups have proven they do not.

It doesn't take a math wizard to see how big a reach it is to say the subsidy to "The Talk" is revenue position in taxes.

Is that really relevant?

The real concern is that it's not the state's place to meddle with the market.

The hypocrisy from conservatives on this issue is confusing.

Dude, get off your fricking high horse. The government isn't going to ever stop manipulating the market. Some of us live in a reality that you don't when you make stupid fricking assertions like:

If the state is going to dump money into a program, I want to see if it makes money for the state or not.

Do you see any money for the state in the OP? Do you see any increase in corporate taxes or even personal taxes after spending over $200 million dollars in film welfare in 2011 (see revenue numbers in the other thread)?

Just saying--given the obvious math why would anyone think it is revenue positivie for the State?

I agree complete with the other guy--the State has no business manipulating the economy for the industry with the loudest lobbyist.

If expecting philosophical consistency from a group means I'm on a high horse, then I'll ride that horse into the sunset, bro.

And you're going to continue to get poor resource allocation.

Some of us live in a reality

You say that while completely ignoring the state's history of awful resource allocation. But whatev.

I guess expecting them to not "dump money" is one of those examples of me living in the cloud.

I should "live in a reality" so that I can more easily accept and tolerate mis-allocation of resources at the whims of the state.

You forgot to call him a commie if he uses public roads. I mean we must hold everyone accountable to be consistent, right? Asking questions that fall outside of your notion of what his consistent views should be shouldn't be allowed.

No, but I also don't see a link to shite in the OP either.

The numbers came from an article in the print edition of the Times Picayune that I could not find on NOLA.com.

The tax numbers are based on an average Louisiana income tax of 6% and the State sales tax of 4%.

The number questionable in the math is the 50% margin on the purchases of supplies and services the show made. I would say very few vendors to the show could make 50% but I gave them the benefit of the doubt to make the revenue to the state as lucrative as any reasonable person might expect.

Have you ever provided any kind of a link in your posts?

You spout off about tax credits and how the state is throwing money away, yet you never provide any kind of link.

At least this time you gave a newspaper, but then we have to take your word that they really printed it and you took it all in the right context.

So, again, link?

You don't have to like anything, but yeah, accepting it is going to be the only way to keep yourself from becoming a bitter old frick as you get older. The anarchist society in which you and G pine for is never going to happen.

Besides, the "manipulation" of the state pulling an industry here versus it going somewhere else is not bad policy if the state is making money off of it. It's the same concept as a corporation investing money into an arm of their business if they expect a better return for that investment.

You can parse words all you want, but this is not an equivalent to market manipulation like Obamacare, Medicare, Medicaid, or federal student loans.
