| What the Bleep Do We Know? Quantum Mechanics (Posted on 2/2/13 at 6:17 pm)
Anyone seen this documentary or have any knowledge from school or otherwise about quantum physics or quantum mechanics. Talks a lot about emotions and why and how things come about.

I have not seen it. But I got my undergrad in Physics and studied QM. I always get a good laugh when someone tries to bring non-physical phenomena into the picture. It has nothing at all to do with emotions.

I like reading about physics.

Yes. Its on youtube and it's pretty germans, but then again, maybe it hasnt been posted before and my idea of the flow of time is wrong? Hmm

What about how we hold something in mind?

IYO are there any brain states that can be reduced to physics? in my experience, most people who studied physics are reductive physicalists.

I have seen the movie, and while it is good at introducing basic quantam mechanics principles it gets too out there for science when they factor in the brain aspect. I mean, the Native Americans couldn't see ships because they didn't understand them? I use the cartoon schematic for the double slit experiment from time to time in here.

Define "brain state" so I can give you a good answer.

I have no idea what a "reductive physicalist" is. Please explain.

Anyone who has an understanding of Physics or does physics would laugh at that bull shite.

well let's use "brain activity" instead of brain state. not to move the goalposts, just for the sake of clarity.

someone who holds the idea that mind / cognition / consciousness is wholly reducible to physical processes. comes up a lot in philosophy of mind debates.

If you mean neuron impulses, it seems to me that you don't need QM for that. There are other subspecialties in human biology that have studied that subject explicitly and more closely.

Not quite true. The idea behind much of science is that you must be able to produce predictions that can be tested. QM does this very well and has passed that test every time. Quantum mechanics was specifically developed to model the behavior of subatomic particles, it has absolutely nothing to do with "brain states", emotions, or the like. If you want to call that "reductive", so be it. It works very well for its purpose and not for anything else. If you can't make specific predictions that cannot be compared with data, all you are doing is some version of this:
