My favorite extra credit assignment: read [/i]Uncle Tom's Cabin[/i] and write at least 5 sentences about what it means to be an "Uncle Tom". I usually get some great responses, and you can tell really quick who read the story. . .

What does it mean today or what does it mean period? If the latter, it's a slave who sucks up to the master at the expense of his/her fellow slaves - very much like a POW who becomes a collaborator just to make life easier for himself. See Samuel L in Django.

was SLJ portraying the character of Jesus Christ? Because that is how Stowe portrays Uncle Tom. I will likely never watch Django, so forgive my ignorance

Read some WEB Dubois and Stephen Douglass would be on the reading list in history class regardless of the month. Read about Carver and his brilliant scientific accomplishments definitely. I can't remember the number of patents held by him.

I think it's the fact that he forgave the men who had just beaten him, right before he dies. Maybe people just don't get this as being the Christian thing to do, so they interpret it to mean that he had been beaten into total submission and was no longer a man.

Yes, though I was in HS. Literally, based on the book alone, it really should have no meaning. However, the connotation above has been the most common comparison. Today, it's any black person who isn't a registered, line-towing Democrat.

"Fences" by August Wilson is a good read if you want to do something different (ie not just the same cliche stuff every year).
