Cool story bro.

In Alaska, open carry is so common, it is rare to enter a place like Walmart and not bump in to 5-6 open carriers. Interestingly, no such incident has ever happened that I'm aware of.

You watch too many bad movies.

I am in agreement with the saying "An armed society is a polite society."

Guns essentially equalize everyone. If a guy built like Shaq has a .45 on his hip and gets into an argument with a guy half his size who also has a .45 on his hip, they are "the same size."

Alaska is quite a bit different that St. Louis, or LA, Boston or Philadelphia....

So you believe that what this guy is doing will eventually get the general public used to people walking the streets with rifles? If you do, then ok, but I'd have to disagree. There is no point in the future that people in an urban setting will consider this sight to be normal.

I believe it's perception driven strictly by what you're accustomed to seeing which drives what you think is okay and not okay.

A few weeks ago a guy who walks into a coffee shop, gets some coffee and goes outside to enjoy the day. Moments later a slew of police cars fly to the area looking for a man who a passerby said was a man walking around with a shotgun. The police question the people at the shop, walk outside to question the man of interest. Turns out that the police got their man, but it wasn't a shotgun. It was an umbrella. Yeah, an umbrella, because it had been raining water from the sky. The caller I can only imagine was some little old lady watching the TV, and the people on the TV getting her all worked up in their circus like attempts to keep her enthralled and tuned in. I feel quite certain that it worked.

In England, I'm sure that a bobby walking around with a gun would cause great unrest amongst the population because of perceptions driven by what they are accustomed to seeing and by how weird they have become about guns in general, yet not so in the US. We are quite accustomed to armed policemen.

What we consider normal and abnormal is driven by what we are accustomed to seeing, and by what our society says is normal and abnormal. If people freak, it's usually because they are taught to freak by influences in their society. Such as is with the umbrella incident.

This assumes both are reasonably intelligent/thoughtful/sane....and both able to handle their weapons in a safe manner. Nobody cares if 2 people with guns kill each another. The shite hits the fan when innocent bystanders are harmed/killed.

Like when LEOs shoot innocent bystanders? No ding on the cops, but this is a far more likely situation.

Yeah, but in fairness, cops receive training. And a lot of it. What does that say about a bunch of typical/average armed gun owner walking the streets?

SO LONG AS HE'S OBEYING THE LAW, more power to him. I'm offended by all kinds of stuff I see and hear. Flat-bill hats, Jason Bieber music and people wearing white after Labor Day. But it's legal so I gotta tolerate.

People offended by OC need to do the same thing. fricking deal with it.

I didn't know these could kill you if improperly used.

"Jason Beiber" huh?

It's his right to do it, and it's my right to think it's a bad idea.

The vast majority do not receive a fraction of the training that would be required to ensure public safety. Citizens have lower rate of misses in self defense than do LEOs.

Not trying to be a dick to anyone, but those are the facts. Some LEOs that I know are excellent and train hard on their own dime to achieve that level of proficiency.

I support the right to open carry, but I think it is tactically stupid. His first robbery might involve someone walking up behind him and stabbing him with a pencil in the ear and taking his damn gun.

I agree.

Then we would all need to register our pencils. Mechanical pencils would probably need to be banned all together.

In all fairness, didn't the NYPD shoot and wound something like 9 innocent bystanders a few months ago?

....so you don't open carry at work?

This is why I don't rely on police officers for tactical advice.

and taking his damn gun.

Happens to cops all the time.

Yeah, but it was how their intensive training taught them to do it.

I go both ways with this. No question an open carrier is a target. He/she will be the first person attacked in a robbery, shooting, ect. But at the same time, there's no cc holster that draws as fast as an oc holster. And I can't cc my FN45 with 15, manstopping rounds. OC is WAY more comfortable.

Given the choice, I would OC.
