| fire arm and ammo craze? Looking for some opinions (Posted on 1/30/13 at 11:48 am)
Just wondering how much longer we are going to have to deal with this whole firearm and ammo craze? I understand the theories of supply and demand, I am just wondering how much longer we will have to deal with ammo shortages and retailers limiting how much you can purchase, along with limited firearm supplies due to increased demand? I am thinking maybe some time in the next 3-6 months , after what ever legislation comes out. But when do you think the bubble will burst and we will see people dumping firearms on to the market trying to get some value out of them?' Sorry if this seems obnoxious, but I am doing some research for class, and I am really PISSED off that I can't buy another Springfield XDM because they are all gone. along with not being able to take the little lady to shoot because ammo is a pain in the arse to find.

Ammo will be backed up till at least the summer. Gun craze will wax and wane, but probably won't go back to normal until the gun bill is struck down.

Some say the end is in 3-6 months, but others, myself included, think that this could potentially last for up to a year, just the way ammo has been backordered and with more people seeing that having a supply of ammo may not be a bad idea for times like these. I dont think we are going to see people dump these weapons for a loss, at least not a lot of them, because I think people also realize that all it takes is one more nutjob to start this shite all over again

Probably a good while. The manufactures have a whole lot of catching up to do.

It will end at 10:35 A.M. in 53 days. - Nostradamus If you go to Precision Range, just buy your target ammo there. They will only sell you one box at a time to be shot there.

It just depends. Bigger stores, like Academy, Wal-Mart, etc, will get back to normal ammo inventories quicker. For smaller stores, it could take over a year before they have the same inventory they had 3 months ago.

This is my estimate as well - availability will creep back in for some calibers as early as April. "Normalcy" in ammo availability should return by June/July, though. As far as guns - they are more of a major purchase. I guess the good news is - there will be a bunch of sales later in the year as production catches up with the backorders - people who were on the cusp and could find guns, have already bought those and more. I guess that could be a silver lining (I know, a stretch, but that's all I have).

Agree.

I'm hoping that ammo manufacturers are going to ramp up their production capacity to some extent. One thing about all of these new gunowners is that they are going to want to shoot. Also, I think professional training is going to become increasingly popular, and for that, much ammo is needed. In other words, I think that for many reasons the demand curve for ammo has been permanently shifted outward, absent any legislation that makes it prohibitively expensive to shoot, and I would expect ammo makers to respond to that.

This is a fair assessment. The guy's at the Academy store over here noticed the lines thinning out quite a bit. They unload their AR's at 9am from the truck to the racks and they are gone by 11am, if not earlier. But 2 hrs is a long time for them to sit when everyone and their dog are looking for one.

While things have definitely been constrained a bit, I have been able to find and purchase a small supply of ammo either online or at Walmart or a sporting goods store without a lot of trouble. I stop at Walmart a couple of times a week and one day they have some and the next time they don't. It's a bit hit or miss, but it's there if you look consistently enough.

As soon as this shite eases somewhat i am going to dump some cash into reloading components even though i don't have reloading equipment yet. I reason that if I have the components i can buy press, dies tools at a later date.

I think there will be a larger supply of ammo by the end of February. Should be easier for them to ramp up production. I can see the firearm demand to keep pushing supply on into the summer.

Not sure how easy it is for them to focus more on the calibers that are out of stock right now, but I would think they are making as much 22/9mm/223 as possible. What I was getting at before is that I would expect them to invest in new production capacity. I would also bet that the foreign manufacturers are producing/have produced a lot more in the last month than they were pre-Sandy Hook, and I would expect that Wolf/Tula stuff to start flooding the market soon.

I think you will slowly start to see it loosen up around late summer IF there is no other nationally publicized shooting between now and then.

Yes, which is why I don't see an increase in production in the future. Many of the majors already had 3 8hr shifts 7 days a week. Can't create more time in the day

We REALLY don't need another nut job shooting for a very long time. I think we'll dodge a mag and AWB this time but it'll come within the next few shootings that use "assault weapons". That being said, I'm keeping every one of the 60 mags I have in route to the house.
